LOVELOCK - Organizers of the Animal Shelter fundraiser, this Saturday Oct. 22, say plans are coming along just fine.

LOVELOCK - I opened my truck the other day and noticed shredded paper under the seat. Somehow, a mouse had gotten into the truck and was making a nice home for the winter. With the onset of cold weather, mice are beginning to migrate to structures as they search for food and shelter.

Herrera death not likely homicide, NDI says Officials await toxicology report for final result

Long time Lovelock resident Emigdio Herrera was found dead in front of his Lovelock home early morning on Oct.10. Preliminary results from an autopsy performed on Herrera indicate that he was not likely the victim of a homicide NDI says.

Local students get lesson in fire safety

LOVELOCK - Oct.15 marked the end of Fire Safety Week, and here in Pershing County the volunteers of the Lovelock Fire Department conducted training for first- through fifth-grade students.

LOVELOCK - Three motorists were killed on Friday, Oct. 14, in two separate crashes involving wrong-way drivers. One of the fatalities is a Lovelock resident.

Proposed rules to child labor laws

LOVELOCK - Growing up in a farming community, I spent most of my summers baling hay and straw for my family's small farm operation and for neighboring farmers. I do not recall following any certain rules or laws about the number of hours worked, safety regulations or having documented training on how to operate the equipment. We were told how to drive the tractor, operate the hay elevator, to keep the hay stacked straight in the hayloft and most important, do not to fall out of the loft. However, times have changed and more emphasis is being placed on safety of young agricultural employees.

Spaghetti feed fundraiser planned Nov. 12

LOVELOCK - Sue Tucker is once again fighting cancer. She must travel to Carson City once a week and medical bills are pouring in. A benefit spaghetti feed will be held at the Longhorn Saloon on Nov. 12 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. $8 per person to-go orders may be called in to the Longhorn at 273-7015.

Lovelock Senior Pro Rodeo -

The Lovelock Senior Pro Rodeo held last month was a grassroots level operation. Local organizers and volunteers worked tirelessly for months to make ready the rodeo grounds, collect sponsors and organize all aspects of the rodeo. The newly formed MKC Rodeo Committee, JJ Myers, Julie Myers, Jodie Chico and Dewayne Kulbeth, all local Lovelock residents, enlisted the help of numerous local volunteers to make the rodeo a success and keep it coming back year after year.Photos by Reina Youngberg, Special to Winnemucca Publishing

Small Town Christmas celebration plans underway Area businesses, residents invited to participate

LOVELOCK - Plans have already begun for the Small Town Christmas celebration in Lovelock. Many activities are planned for Saturday, Dec. 3.

Farm Bill supports more than agriculture

LOVELOCK - A new omnibus Farm Bill is under construction in the U.S. Congress. The last farm bill was passed in 2008, and since the legislation's lifespan covers four - five years, debate is gearing up for a new bill next year. Farm bills can be highly controversial and can impact international trade, environmental preservation, food safety and the well-being of rural communities. The very first Farm Bill, enacted under President Roosevelt (FDR) in 1933, was designed to aid struggling farmers during the Great Depression. The bill established support for prices for six basic commodity crops by paying farmers to reduce production.

'Silly Monster' -

Gracie Montes, 10 , a fifth-grader in Robert Meldrum's class at Imlay Elementary, wrote this Halloween poem. The assignment was to write a story about Halloween, Meldrum said. Montes chose to write this poem.

Have catapult, will travel - PCHS physics project an annual smash

LOVELOCK - Applying their studies in projectile motion to the world outside the classroom, the 19 Pershing County High School seniors enrolled in Valdine McLean's year-long physics course occupied Joe Yanni Field last Monday afternoon to sling pumpkins against a backdrop of appropriate music, either Halloween-related or dramatically orchestral.

Red Ribbon Week draws attention to drug abuse

LOVELOCK - Red ribbons have been spotted all over the town of Lovelock. The ribbons are to promote awareness of drug abuse, Frontier Community Coalition Director Jeff Munk said.Red Ribbon Week was started in the 1980s and is the oldest drug prevention campaign in the country, according to drugsrdumb.com.
