LOVELOCK - Growing up in a farming community, I spent most of my summers baling hay and straw for my family's small farm operation and for neighboring farmers. I do not recall following any certain rules or laws about the number of hours worked, safety regulations or having documented training on how to operate the equipment. We were told how to drive the tractor, operate the hay elevator, to keep the hay stacked straight in the hayloft and most important, do not to fall out of the loft. However, times have changed and more emphasis is being placed on safety of young agricultural employees.

The Lovelock Senior Pro Rodeo held last month was a grassroots level operation. Local organizers and volunteers worked tirelessly for months to make ready the rodeo grounds, collect sponsors and organize all aspects of the rodeo. The newly formed MKC Rodeo Committee, JJ Myers, Julie Myers, Jodie Chico and Dewayne Kulbeth, all local Lovelock residents, enlisted the help of numerous local volunteers to make the rodeo a success and keep it coming back year after year.Photos by Reina Youngberg, Special to Winnemucca Publishing
