BLM sells geothermal lease in Pershing County

RENO -The Bureau of Land Management Nevada generated $28,982 during its competitive geothermal lease sale held in Reno on Jan. 29, selling five parcels, two in Churchill County, two in Humboldt County and one in Pershing County, that comprised 7,056 acres. The high sale bid on each of the five parcels was $2 per acre. Four of the parcels were sold to Ormat Nevada Inc ., and one was sold to Colorado-based Presco Energy, LLC.

LOVELOCK - Lovelock holds its annual Valentine's Day wedding and vow renewal ceremony in the Lover's Lock Plaza this Valentine's Day. The multiple wedding and vow renewal is sponsored each year by the Pershing County Chamber of Commerce.

Lover's Aloft Balloon Festival

LOVELOCK - The Lover's Aloft Balloon Festival had a record amount of balloonist participation this year. Twenty-one balloons took part in the festival.

Trichomoniasis Prevention

Last week in my article about artificial insemination (AI), I made a comment about one of the advantages of (AI) was that it can reduce the danger of spreading infectious genital diseases from bull to cow during a natural service. One of these diseases prevalent in our area is Trichomoniasis commonly referred to as "trich," Trichomoniasis infection of cattle is a devastating disease for cattle producers. When diagnosed in a herd, it causes economic loss and emotional pain. There is no treatment for Trichomoniasis infection. Therefore, emphasis must be placed on prevention. The foundation of building a prevention program for your herd is testing all the bulls that will have exposure to your cows.

Firefighters ball and dinner this Saturday

LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its 72nd Annual Firefighters Ball and Dinner on Feb. 23 at Sturgeon's Casino. Preparations are under way for the department's largest fundraising event of the year. The dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the Ball starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $30 for the dinner and the Ball is free to the public. Because of the community and businesses in Lovelock, the Firemans Ball has proven to be a very successful fundraiser, organizers said. The department supports many local organizations and uses the proceeds to purchase specialized equipment to firemen successfully provide public safety and support to the citizens and visitors to the city of Lovelock and Pershing County. Donations made to LVFD help cover these costs.

She loves her hobby

LOVELOCK - Katie Griggs, one of the 21 balloonists at last weekend's Lover's Aloft Balloon Festival, has been a licensed balloon pilot for 27 years, she said. She is also the designer of her balloon, Twisted. When looking at the balloon one can see the quilting pattern.

She really genuinely wants to learn and is never afraid to ask questions. Alysa is polite to her teachers as well as to students. She is a model student and citizen. I can't say enough good things about her."

One couple renews their vows; another gets engaged

LOVELOCK - Love was in the air over the Valentine weekend in Lovelock. One couple renewed their wedding vows in the Lover's Lock Plaza on Valentine's Day and another couple got engaged in a balloon on Friday.

Lovelock Food Bank is recipient of Southwest Gas giving program

LOVELOCK - Employees of Lovelock's Paiute Pipeline Company, a subsidiary of Southwest Gas Corporation, have partnered with the Lovelock Community Food Bank. These generous donations from Southwest Gas employees will be used to benefit all ages in the community who have the need to use the food bank.

Nevada Cattlemen's Association announce 2013 Scholarship Requirements

ELKO - Graduating seniors interested in pursuing an agriculture education should apply for the Nevada Cattlemen's Association annual scholarship. The Nevada Cattlemen's Association will be giving this year's outstanding graduating senior a $1,000 scholarship to attend and junior college or four-year university.
