WINNEMUCCA, Nev.- Around these parts, Labor Day means just one thing: it's time for a fabulous weekend dedicated to some serious, end-of-summer fun.

LCC gives back to community Staff driven volunteerism

LOVELOCK - Lovelock Correctional Center has a history of supporting causes throughout Pershing County, Nevada and the world. It has been nominated for the Real Heroes award through the American Red Cross and through bake sales and employee donations has been able to send 10 packages with T-shirts, school supplies, first aid supplies and toys to Zambia for former Relay for Life Community Relationship Manager Gracie Geremia, who is now a Peace Corps volunteer beginning to teach school in the African country.

American Red Cross Announces Nominees for Real Heroes Awards Banquet Special to the Review-Miner

Winnemucca - The American Red Cross, Winnemucca Service Center, has announced its nominees for the 2011 Real Heroes celebration and "A Taste of Winnemucca" Banquet to be held on September 8, 2012 at the Winnemucca Convention Center- East Hall beginning at 6pm.

LOVELOCK - September was designated as National Library Card Sign-up month in 1988 by the American Library Association. The ALA and Pershing County Library remind parents that the most important back-to-school supply is a library card, said library staff Pam Munk.

Nevada Office of Veterans Services to visit Lovelock Visit part of rural outreach

LOVELOCK - The Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS) will visit Lovelock on Sept. 5 as part of its effort to reach veterans in the rural areas of Nevada.

Gutierrez fundraiser

On Oct. 28 at the Strip Park, prior to the Growl-O-Ween is a fundraiser will take place for Louie Gutierrez, the 2-year-old son of Lovelock residents Marcos and Coco Gutierrez who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in August. A walk-a-thon is being planned to start at 10 a.m. along with a raffle and T-shirt sale.

Dehorning Research on Feeder Cattle

WINNEMUCCA - Fall roundup time is near and ranchers will be gathering up their cattle, weaning calves and sending them to market. Many of these feeder calves will be sent to feedlots, where they will continued to be fed and grow into finished beef. Many of the cattle raised on western rangelands are cattle with horns. This is mainly a factor of the purebred breeds or composite breeds raised by ranchers, which do well on rangeland forages and in rangeland environments.

USDA Celebrates the Start of a Healthier School Year for America's Kids New Standards Ensure Students are Offered Healthier, More Nutritious Foods in the Lunch Line

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Kevin Concannon today announced that America's students will see healthier and more nutritious foods in the cafeteria as they return to school this year. The new nutrition standards for school meals, implemented as a result of the historic Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, will help to combat child hunger and obesity and improve the health and nutrition of the nation's children.

An Abundance of Fruit

This summer I have seen an overabundance of fruit on many of the local fruit trees. I have seen some fruit trees with so much fruit growing, that the limbs were breaking off. So, why is this year such a good year for fruit production?

4-H announces Tri-County Fair results

LOVELOCK - Exhibits are a means of showing others what 4-h members have completed in their projects. Exhibits often are the actual items made in the club or it can be educational posters which explain something they learned. Pershing County 4-H members displayed their exhibits at the P.C. Senior Center August 10 - 19. They were entered in the Tri-County Fair August 31 - September 2nd. If only one ribbon is listed, it was from the Tri-County Fair. Following are the results:

LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Frontier Days Committee held its annual recruitment meeting Sept. 6. One new volunteer attended the meeting; Melissa Hughes will work with others on the events subcommittee.

Fundraiser for local baby with leukemia a success

LOVELOCK - Organizers of the fundraiser for 2-year-old Louie Gutierrez are calling the event a success. Organizers declined to say how much money was raised to help the family pay for medical expenses, but one of the organizers, Luetta Thomas, commented, "Our little town with a big heart came through with flying colors."
