Now that the wheat has been harvested and second cutting of hay completed, it is time to prepare for next year's alfalfa crop. August gives growers an opportunity to establish alfalfa fields, provided there is sufficient soil moisture for seed germination and plant emergence. With the uncertainty of next year's water supply, many farmers are taking advantage of this year's water allotment to establish new alfalfa stands.

According to the latest report from AAA Nevada, which tracks gas prices as a service to consumers, all but one metro area in Nevada saw a rise in its average price over the past month.

NDOW Offers Youth Hunts for Upland Game

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is offering a special two-day upland game season for youth hunters. Scheduled for Sept. 29 - 30, the statewide season is open to hunters 15 years of age or younger. Youth hunters 12 -15 years of age are required to possess a junior hunting license with an upland game stamp for the hunt.

Nevada's unemployment rate rises slightly in July to 12 percent

Lander County retains one of the lowest rates in state

WINNEMUCCA - Nevada's unemployment rate rose 0.4 of a percentage point, to a seasonally adjusted 12 percent in July. However, it is still down year over year and 2 percentage points below the recessionary peak of 14 percent, said Bill Anderson, chiefeconomist for the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
