Students get to cut teacher's hair for fundraiser Bake challenges students to collect donations for Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation

LOVELOCK - Lovelock Elementary School recently raised $970 for the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. As a challenge to the students of the school, special education teacher Ed Bake said the class that brought in the most money would get to shave his head during the end of the year carnival day.

Mitchell named PCHS salutatorian Grad to attend University of Nevada, Reno

LOVELOCK - Kalynne Mitchell is Pershing County High School's Class of 2012 salutatorian. She carries a 4.275 GPA and is active in volleyball, basketball and softball.Mitchell said her favorite class is art with teacher Debra Zoback. Because of her love of art, Mitchell said she would like a career in interior design.

LOVELOCK - Claudia Dennler is Pershing County High School's valedictorian for the graduating Class of 2012. She carries a 4.333 GPA and is active in volleyball, basketball and track.

Controlling noxious weeds with goats

LOVELOCK - As I drive around the valley, I see many vacant lots and field borders with noxious weeds growing. One way to control these weeds is by grazing them. Goats can be used to graze noxious weed. They can be used in areas where other management methods may not be efficient, effective or allowed. They can also be quite effective when used in combination with other weed control measures.

Hula hoop, jump rope practices to be held this summer

LOVELOCK - Leslie Millican invites any and all to join the "practices" for hula hoop and jump rope each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. There is no cost.On Wednesday, June 27, Millican will host a "fun competition," beginning at 6 p.m."I'll be breaking the kids into age groups, and it's not necessary to attend any of the prior sessions to join in that evening."

'American Idols' theme for this year's 4th of July Kiddie Parade

LOVELOCK - All children 12 years of age and under are encouraged to walk in the 4th of July Kiddie Parade sponsored by the Pershing County Cattlewomen. Help celebrate this special holiday by dressing in costumes, or decorating a small wagon, depicting an "American Idol."

LCC helps support Peace Corps volunteer Employees give back to community

LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Correctional Center has proven to be an asset to the community of Lovelock as well as the world. Its Employee Fund Committee has organized many ways of giving back, all from local employee donations. One of their most recent projects has been to support a Peace Corps volunteer.
