LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Correctional Center has proven to be an asset to the community of Lovelock as well as the world. Its Employee Fund Committee has organized many ways of giving back, all from local employee donations. One of their most recent projects has been to support a Peace Corps volunteer.
LOVELOCK - The Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department's Relay for Life team consists of four humans and one canine. You guessed it, what's a fire department team without Sparky the Fire Dog?
LOVELOCK - The Rye Patch Volunteer Fire Department responded to three fires in almost as many days over the last week.
LOVELOCK - The Pershing County Senior Center has farmer's market vouchers that can be used at any participating farmer's market by older adults who meet the income requirement of $1,679 per month for one or $2,268 per month for two or more. This is a USDA program to encourage better nutrition among the older population. Vouchers are limited to $30 per family and can be picked up at the senior center, 630 Western Ave., weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
LOVELOCK - Much as the moon did late in the afternoon on May 20, the planet Venus made its way between Earth and the sun on Tuesday, June 5.
LOVELOCK - Author Anita Fisk, a familiar name in educational circles, is a graduate of Pershing County High School and the University of Nevada, Reno. Her second novel, "Unintended Sacrifices" (createspace.com), will be hot off the press in a few weeks.
LOVELOCK - Current recommendations regarding cutting height of alfalfa are designed to maximize yield while maintaining high quality forages and stand longevity. Forage growers frequently cut forages at a height of 3-inches or more.
LOVELOCK - The Nevada State Bank Relay for Life team has been a regular with the Lovelock event for a few years now. This year marks the third year the team's captain, Jeff Meyers, has also co-chaired the local event.
LOVELOCK - The Wells Fargo Relay for Life team has been part of the Lovelock Relay scene since the beginning in 2007. Team captain Jennifer Hill said they first began with the event because the bank employees thought it was a good way to give back to the community, but the reasons have expanded since then.
LOVELOCK - Nevada has been named in the headlines as one of the key "battle ground" states that may determine the winner of the race between President Barack Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney.
LOVELOCK - As we move into the hot dry summer months, many lawns may require additional irrigation. As everyone knows in this area the main factor in having a nice yard is water. All plants need water. When to apply water and how much are decisions anyone growing ornamental plants or watering lawns must make.

LOVELOCK - If anyone has taken a drive around the Lovelock Valley recently, you may have seen a crop other than alfalfa being grown. Due to the proposed milk plant being built in Fallon and the need for more dairy feed such as corn and corn silage, some local farmers are trying their hand at producing corn as a rotational crop with their alfalfa hay.
