Kindergarten grads plan ahead

LOVELOCK - Even before entering the first grade, kindergarten graduates already seemed certain of their future careers during last week's graduation ceremony. A large audience of family members loudly applauded as each student crossed the stage to accept their diploma and announce their ambition in life - subject to change, of course.

Hot Potatoes a Relay for Life fixture Team has been involved in Lovelock event for five years

LOVELOCK - The Hot Potatoes Relay for Life team has been involved with the Lovelock event for five years. Through the years they have kept most of their original members.

Summer Show & Shine to be held this weekend

LOVELOCK - The Street Fever 2012 Summer Show & Shine will be held this weekend under the trees at the Courthouse Park in Lovelock.

Tent caterpillar cocoon -

Cocoons such as these can be found in many canyons throughout Pershing County during the spring. This photo was taken in Dun Glen Canyon approximately 10 miles northeast of Mill City. Pershing County Extension Educator Steve Foster identified this photo as probably a tent caterpillar cocoon. According to the Washington State University Extension, the caterpillars have orange and black markings. After approximately six to eight weeks the caterpillars turn into light brown, stout-bodied moths.

Parade preparation -

Red Holsteins Ligarto and Picado are prepped for Sunday's parade by Manuel Azevedo of Merced, Calif., during the 78th annual Portuguese Festa procession and Mass, followed by a dinner and auction. Bulls pulled decorated wooden carts, some with bread and wine, through downtown Lovelock to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. The event is a celebration of Portuguese culture.

78th annual Portuguese Festa held over holiday weekend

The I.D.E.S. Society of Lovelock hosted the 78th Annual Festa last Saturday and Sunday, May 26 - 27. The Festa is sponsored by persons of Azorean-Portuguese descent to commemorate the end of a dreadful famine in Portugal in the year 1323. The event is a religious, civic and cultural celebration of thanksgiving. The letters I.D.E.S. represent Irmandade do Divino Espirito Santo in Portuguese. When translated, this phrase means Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Spirit. Every year many out-of-town visitors come to the Festa. Many are former Lovelock residents who return for this weekend event.

GBC grads -

Great Basin College held a ceremony on May 19 at the Elko Convention Center for students who have been attending college in the area. Former students from the 2010 and 2011 graduating classes of Pershing County High School in Lovelock celebrated with their families and friends following the graduation ceremony. Left to right, Kayla York with her Certificate of Achievement in the Electrical Systems Technology, Robert Coyle with his Associates Degree in Diesel Technology and his Certificate of Achievement in Diesel Technology, Trevor Gurley with his Certificate of Achievement in Industrial Millwright Technology and LaDonna Morlan with her Certificate of Achievement in Industrial Millwright Technology.

Pershing County Livestock Old Timers results announced

LOVELOCK - Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends all got into the act at the Old Timers Showmanship Contest at the Pershing County Livestock Show May 13.The contest consisted of showing goats, which were not shown when the old timers were in 4-H. The contest was judged by Kalynne Mitchell and Abby Bake, seniors who had participated in Round Robin. It cost $10 to enter someone, one's self or another, into the contest. It cost $20 to get out of showing.

Baccalaureate held for graduates

LOVELOCK - Ten graduating students participated in a baccalaureate ceremony held at the Grace St. Francis Community Church on May 29.

Confirmation ceremony held for Lovelock youth Diocese of Reno Bishop Randolph Calvo presides over event

LOVELOCK - A total of 18 students received the sacrament of confirmation from Bishop Randolph Calvo at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on May 29.

Safety recommendations when baling, handling large bales

LOVELOCK - Hay harvest has begun. Many fields in the area have reached the pre-bloom or 10 percent bloom stage necessary for high-quality hay. By the time this article reaches the paper, most of this year's first cutting of the hay crop will be complete. However, it is always a good idea to review some of the important safety items with yourself, family members and employees who are involved with the farming operation.

Tradition continues in Lovelock 78th Portuguese Festa held over holiday weekend

LOVELOCK - The 78th Portuguese Festa was a great success, with visitors from several states coming to Lovelock to attend. In addition to visitors from many towns in Nevada, guests came from the states of California, Idaho, Iowa, Oregon, Texas and Utah.
