Swing and miss on Fallon Naval Air Station expansion

Although the national defense spending bill for 2023 has passed the U.S. House without the proposed expansion of the Fallon Naval Air Station, Nevada’s 2nd U.S. House District Rep. Mark Amodei said on Nevada Newsmakers Tuesday that he hopes the Senate will ride to the Navy’s rescue, eventually. “I think it has to start in the Senate and because the Senate is the Senate, they start late with everything,” Amodei told host Sam Shad. “So in the Senate, the (National) Defense Authorization Act is still to be baked, if you will.”

Bipartisan opposition to Question 3 mounts, with more Republicans against

Sixty percent of Republican voters, along with several Republican candidates for federal and statewide offices, oppose implementing open primaries and ranked-choice voting in Nevada’s elections, according to a new Nevada Independent/OH Predictive Insights poll. Their overwhelming opposition — just 16 percent of Republican likely voters expressed support for the initiative — marks a growing trend of bipartisan disapproval of the major election changes proposed by Question 3 on this year’s general election ballot. It reverses a position of stronger support recorded among Nevada voters as recently as 10 weeks ago.

Harvesting Fall Alfalfa

What should you do with fall alfalfa? Leave it? Cut it? Graze it? Each of these options can be correct under appropriate conditions. Making the best decision requires balancing the associated rewards and risks with each option. In the past, producers have been advised to cut hay 4-6 weeks prior to a killing frost (The average first frost date for most of Northern Nevada is October 1st- 10th). This advice is based on the fact that alfalfa plants need time to store carbohydrates in their root system prior to a killing frost in order to prevent winter kill. About 50 percent of the stored carbohydrates are used during the winter for plant survival. The remaining carbohydrates are available in the spring for initial herbage growth.
