No, this is not about cleaning your house or your garage. You know how I have struggled with that! In fact, I had determined that this would be the week of great possession severance as I tossed and chucked worthless junk, however, it is a challenge that I can face only in small doses. My mom blamed hanging on to bits of aluminum foil, bread ties, and cottage cheese containers to the Depression and World War II; I do not have that excuse. I just like to hang on.
A new study by researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno documents that hunting generates millions of dollars in economic impact in Nevada, especially in rural communities where wildlife is plentiful, including Elko, White Pine and Lincoln counties. The study, led by researchers in the University’s Department of Economics, Extension and Experiment Station, found that hunters spent about $380 million in 2020 on hunting in Nevada, on both travel and hunting expenses, as well as big-ticket items such as off-highway vehicles, firearms, ammunition and campers. Spending in 2020 was almost identical to spending in 2019, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nevada’s treasurer wants to address wealth disparities by creating savings accounts for every child born on Medicaid — a program called baby bonds, where money is deposited at the time of birth and grows with interest until the child is 18 years old. He began serving as sheriff in 2014 and said that his bid for governor is motivated by a desire to “further his public service and represent, protect and serve the entire state of Nevada.” The Republican candidate has attacked Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak for a failure of leadership during the COVID pandemic, as well as on other policies surrounding the economy and a lack of support for small businesses.
