Cognitive Vital Signs

I mentioned cognitive a few weeks ago. Since then, I have thought, researched, reflected, and decided to expand this idea further. Dr. Artz at our Dementia Friendly Summit suggested that doctors check our blood pressure, weight, and height, so why don’t they also pay attention to our cognitive health? “How is your brain doing today?” might be an opening question. Key elements of cognitive health include the regular diet, exercise, social participation, and plenty of sleep routine you well know, but how to prioritize and why? I’m guessing each person will describe a unique order, as in “Which came first? The chicken or the egg?” This brings me back to beginning teachers. I’d remind them that our #1 job is education.

Christ Lutheran preschool celebrates 20 year anniversary

Little minds often ask the biggest questions. Preschool and Pre-K are where children learn the very foundation of what it means to be a student. Christ Lutheran Church & Preschool recently celebrated 20 years of not only preparing children to be students, but also teaching them about Jesus.  “The very heart of being a student is to sit, listen, and ask questions, just like we teach in Chapel” said Pastor Mark Kliewer.

Humboldt County school board trustees discuss position on political posturing

Politics tends to bleed into just about any important aspect of life, including education. With politically charged elements of curriculum becoming requirements for graduation, expectations for teachers, and certain legislation passing, making sure that the district can be there for every student, despite politics, has become increasingly important.

Wildlife agencies work to restore wetlands for declining Great Basin shorebird populations

On a warm September morning, Mike Goddard pointed his scope toward a marshy pond within the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. What Goddard hoped to spot: The many migratory birds that forage in the shallow shores of the wetlands, once abundant in this area outside of Fallon. “The short, stout ones with long, straight bills are long-billed dowitchers,” he observes, peering into the mounted spotting scope. “The big, white ones are American avocets. Then there are some small sandpipers over there to the west… We’ll go up and do a count here real quick.”

Nevada takes shot to end Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Yucca license process

Nevada is asking the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to revisit the issue of Yucca Mountain —where the federal government has long sought to build a national nuclear waste repository in the Nevada desert —  to keep the project from getting a license. The move to dismiss the Yucca licensing process, which has been suspended for 11 years since Congress stopped funding it, would set the project back years if a future administration tried to revive it and if Nevada continued to oppose the project.  “[T]he lingering fiction of the licensing application needs to end,” said Agency for Nuclear Projects Executive Director Fred Dilger in a brief interview this week.

Incumbent Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak and his Republican challenger, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, laid out competing visions for Nevada on the debate stage Sunday in the first — and likely only — general election debate in the race for governor.  The pair sparred on a range of issues, debating the governor’s performance on COVID response, the economy and education, while Sisolak pressed Lombardo over his record as sheriff, a recent increase in crime and his position on abortion.  The nearly 90-minute, town hall-style debate — moderated by The Nevada Independent CEO Jon Ralston on Sunday morning — comes less than three weeks before the start of early voting.
