News doesn't change much, so what's new?

By Glenn Mollette

Every day we turn on the television and hear about all the wars in the Middle East. Life is bad in the Middle East. Take your pick of Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and currently Israel and the Gaza strip. We aren't hearing good news from any of those places. So what's new?

Volunteering is rewarding

For many years I have enjoyed the weekly opinion articles submitted by Roy Bale, "Postcards from Texas" and Tom Stoker's historic tales of Lovelock and Pershing County. Lately I have had the pleasure of "DesertTown Reflections" by Dan O'Connor too.

Wonderful Winnemucca

We are writing to let the entire community of Winnemucca know how much we appreciate the kindness and generosity your town showed us during the course of a stressful over-night stopover on Sept. 13 - 14.

My 2¢ - for what it's worth

I attended the Chamber's Candidate's Night and, for the most part, found it very informative. Since I do not live within city limits, the City Council race does not impact me, but I enjoyed learning more about the candidates. Although I do not have children and who runs the School Board should not concern me, I did like the contrast of a "regular soccer-mom" vs. an education professional. I did not think Mr. Bumgartner did himself any favors by reciting all the years and jobs he has had in the education system, but then said we still have a problem with graduation rates. Ms. Bengochea, on the other hand, brought forth real concerns from a parent's standpoint, I felt she was very approachable and will take the "civilian" population's concerns to the Board.

Top of his class

Letter to the Editor

After all the campaigning and Candidate's Nights, the District 6 judge candidates Jim Shirley and Todd Plimpton both come across as honorable and knowledgeable men. Shirley seems maybe more compassionate, Plimpton maybe more forceful. Thing is, those shark attorneys who advertise on TV that they can get anybody off will have no respect for compassion. They will try to dominate the courtroom and push the judge into a corner.

Community support appreciated

Opening a can of worms

Barry, I thank you for your kind comments about the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Team and what the fine men and women volunteers are doing for Humboldt County. I am sure lives have been saved and many more will be saved in the years to come. Thank all of you for your hard work to make the Search and Rescue Team a reality.

Caregiver Awareness Month

Did you know that November is Caregiver Awareness Month for Relay for Life?

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

My name is Kim Bhakta and I am Peter Bhakta's widow. I am writing to express my concern over the headline in your newspaper on the article noting Peter's passing.

Voice your appreciation

Letter to the Editor

I'm wondering just how many readers of the Lovelock Review-Miner appreciate and enjoy the columns by Dan O'Connor as much as I do? Second question: If you do enjoy his writings, how many of you have told him via e-mail, or some other means? Thirdly, how many of you have informed the newspaper editor how much you like his column? They don't know unless you tell them.

Spreading Christmas cheer

Cancer at Christmas - could the timing be any worse? I just want to mention a few things that may help your loved one to have a happy holiday season.
