This letter is to show support for keeping the name of the new [Battle Mountain] football field as the Tom Norris Field.

Professional services should have written contract

At the most recent meeting of the Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) Board of Trustees on Thursday, May 21st, questions were raised about the lack of a written contract with HGH general counsel, Mr. O.Kent Maher.

Protect yourself from skin cancer

Did you know that May is Skin Cancer/Melanoma Awareness month? Many skin cancers are caused by excess exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or other sources. Protection from UV radiation is important all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. UV rays from the sun can reach you on cloudy days and hazy days as well as bright and sunny days. UV rays also reflect off of surfaces like water, cement, sand and snow. Indoor tanning (using a tanning bed, booth or sunlamp) exposes you to UV radiation.

There's No Such Thing as an Illegal Knife

"Nationwide, knife laws vary in neighboring towns, counties, cities and states," writes Jesse J. Holland for the Associated Press. "This mishmash makes it difficult for citizens to comply." The AP's interest in knife laws stems from the recent death, in police custody in Baltimore, of Freddie Gray. Police justified Gray's arrest by claiming he was carrying an "illegal" switchblade knife. It turned out that the knife was a perfectly "legal" blade.

The future of Burning Man and HGH

Burning Man has the utmost respect for Jim Parrish and we have loved the level of service that Humboldt General Hospital has provided to Burning Man for the past four years. They have grown with us and, with oversight from the BLM, have tremendously upgraded the level of care we provide to participants.

Home show success

I want to extend my thanks to everyone who attended the second annual Tri-County Home Show last weekend.

Get involved in Relay for Life

We have seen many changes take place in politics and our economy. However, one constant is that many people are battling cancer and many others are supporting their loved ones each and every day. These realities make dollars donated and hours volunteered to the American Cancer Society in our community so important.

Nurse worried about Burning Man switch

I am very concerned about the Burning Man organization’s choice of new medical management for Burning Man 2015. I am an emergency room RN in Reno and I have volunteered for the last several years with HGH at Burning man as their lead RN.

Can Pershing County afford Burning Man?

Hasn’t Pershing County paid dearly for the Burning Man Events, can we as taxpayers continue to do so? Pershing County has repeatedly been sued, either by or with BRC, requiring legal representation costing us greatly, even when we win, we lose. BRC clearly violated the “Settlement Agreement” by appealing, it’s not settled if it’s ongoing.

Disappointed about frivolous case

Editor:   Recently I had to make a local court appearance on behalf of my dog. My dog was accused of maiming our neighbor’s goats and causing indirect damage to the property. To be short, I don’t blame my neighbor for wanting compensation from someone for her loss of the goats.
