Dove is still laughing

Glad to see Lee Dove is still laughing at the justice system.

Thank law enforcement for keeping us safe

With all of the violence against law enforcement officers that has occurred across our country this summer, I think it is timely for the residents in Pershing County to take the time to “Thank a Law Enforcement Officer” for putting their lives on the line each day as they go to work to keep our communities safe

Pershing: Nevada’s third-largest county soon to be its poorest?

August will again mark Pershing County briefly becoming Nevada’s third largest county with the start of an event without benefit but not without cost.

Letter to the editor: Pulling the heart strings

Wow, that man from Tipperary, Ireland, knows how to pull the heart strings of an old guy that once lived in Lovelock Town.

What do we want?

I recently attended the certificate of need hearing for the renovation and expansion occurring at Humboldt General Hospital. At the hearing, statements submitted by members of the community were available for public review. A sentence in one of the statements opposing the project caused me to think about the healthcare provided by Humboldt General Hospital to our community. That person wrote, “The taxpayers in Humboldt County just want a local hospital with good quality care at a reasonable cost.”

Consider solutions

On Thursday, July 16, my wife and I left Wal-Mart to go to McDonalds for lunch. This of course entailed running the gauntlet of beggars between Wal-Mart and Winnemucca Blvd. “Anything Helps”, “Homeless Veteran”, (think any of them could produce a DD-214?), I can. A group of three — including one woman — were stationed at the entrance to the Flying J with their signs. It was a beautiful day and we had planned on eating on the patio outside McDonalds, but a homeless man was draped across a table asleep, we ate inside.

Yes, I am biased

In recent debates regarding Humboldt General Hospital it was implied that my opinion did not count for two specific reasons. One that I worked for HGH, and two that I love my job. My only reply to this is … You are absolutely right … I AM BIASED.

PGH lauded for outstanding service

I would like your readers to know that Pershing General Hospital recently received outstanding constituent service from Governor Sandoval’s office.

An open letter to the Raley’s COO

June 1, 2015 you started your dream job as Chief Operating Officer. Did you tell Mr. Teel and the board of directors that you would work hard, be honest and improve the profit margin percentage?

Let the buyer beware

In reference to the article on the front page of The Humboldt Sun dated July 3 — 6, 2015; Rumors confirmed: Local supermarket closing. This comes as no big surprise; some years ago when Walmart announced it was going to upgrade its store to a superstore, the warning went out to the local grocery stores, “Bring your prices in line or close your doors.”

Time to stand up and be counted

In reference to the article of the commission meeting in your June 26 — 29 edition, my enthusiasm is overwhelming. In my 71 years of continual residence in Paradise Valley, I have never felt that the rurals have ever been included in the planning and the benefits of a project like this.

Nevada Ranchers reach agreement with Bureau of Land Management

Dan and Eddyann Filippini, of Battle Mountain, are grateful to Nevada BLM leadership for partnering to settle a long-standing dispute between the Filippinis and the Battle Mountain District Office about responsible management of their grazing allotments. The Filippini’s are fifth generation ranchers with family members raising cattle in northern and central Nevada since 1870’s. Ranching is at the core of who they are, and is an important part of the culture and history of Nevada. They are relieved to have reached an agreement which allows them to turn out their cattle this season. The reality is that this went forward because of some great people at BLM taking a stand with us and doing the right thing.

June is National Cancer Survivor Month

This month is National Cancer Survivor Month and thanks to advances in cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and follow-up care, more people than ever are surviving the disease. According to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Treatment & Survivorship Facts & Figures 2014 — 2015, there are 14.5 million cancer survivors alive in the U.S. today, and that number is expected to grow to almost 19 million by 2024.

HCSO looking for search and rescue volunteers

Do you have the urge to be awakened in the middle of the night to a recorded voice instructing you to report to the county dispatch building within the next hour? Also, this voice says bring stuff so you can survive anywhere in Humboldt County for 48 hours without any outside assistance and do it in any weather conditions. And, you now know there is a uniform requirement which you were previously told to purchase at your own expense along with all that survival stuff.

Fishing for problems that don’t exist

This letter is in response to the one submitted by Lewis Trout regarding the handling of professional service contracts at Humboldt General Hospital.
