$10 billion in private investment fund will support rurals

WASHINGTON - The White House Rural Council recently announced the creation of the new U.S. Rural Infrastructure Opportunity Fund through which private entities can invest in job-creating rural infrastructure projects across the country. An initial $10 billion has been committed to the fund with greater investment expected to follow. Target investments will include hospitals, schools and other educational facilities, rural water and wastewater systems, energy projects, broadband expansion, local and regional food systems, and other rural infrastructure.

There are two logos now on the high school and each one is approximately 11 by 14 feet. They are powder-coated, heavy gauge plasma cut metal by Mountain Man Originals of Ontario, Ore.

Assumpcao enters a guilty plea in dog shooting case from April

Man fined $195 for dog running at large

A man whose dog was shot to death by a Lander County sheriff's deputy in April pleaded guilty to having a dog running at large and was fined $195 in the Argenta Justice Court on July 15.

USDA implements key insurance provision

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced continued progress in implementing provisions of the 2014 Farm Bill that will strengthen and expand insurance coverage options for farmers and ranchers. The new Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO), available through the federal crop insurance program and set to begin with the 2015 crop year, is designed to help protect producers from yield and market volatility.

Although the practice of hydraulic fracturing, "fracking," in connection with drilling for oil or natural gas has been generating controversy in much of the country for some time, Humboldt County hasn't yet been identified as a potential location for oil or natural gas drilling using the fracking method.

Auction sees highest prices ever

Superior Livestock Auction average $1,500 a head for cattle

WINNEMUCCA - "This is the highest price for which cattle have ever been sold at our Winnemucca auction," said Jim Davis, head of Superior Livestock Auction, held July 30 - 31 in Winnemucca. Davis didn't have a total for how much money changed hands at the auction, but said, "If you take 107,000 head of cattle and multiply it by an average selling price of $1,500 a head you'd come pretty close." ($160.5 million)

Legislation moves out of committee and to the House

WINNEMUCCA - The Pine Forest lands bill broke loose from the logjam it's been caught in for months, and with a unanimous vote from the House Natural Resources Committee, moved on downstream to a position where it can be voted on by the full House of Representatives.

Nevada lands bills would create 71,500 acres of wilderness

An historic package of Northern Nevada lands bills - six introduced by Rep. Mark Amodei (NV-2) and one by Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-4) passed the House Natural Resources Committee by unanimous consent on July 30.
