Every year Humboldt County Commissioners approve a $60,000 budgetary committment to a juvenile facility for juvenile delinquents in Douglas County. This week, they learned more about where that money goes and how it is used. The director of the Douglas County facility, called China Springs (boy's section) and Aurora Pines (girl's section), came to Winnemucca and familiarized the commissioners with what the camp is and what they're trying to do for the kids there.

RENO/LAS VEGAS - The University of Nevada School of Medicine released a new report, "Physician Workforce in Nevada - 2014 Edition," contains current, historical and comparative data on the Allopathic (M.D.) and Osteopathic (D.O.) physician workforce in Nevada. The focus of this report is to improve health workforce planning and policy development in Nevada through the preparation and dissemination of the most current information on the physician workforce.
In the town's early years, a physician usually lived in Battle Mountain. From 1896 to 1903, Dr. William Henry Hood had a busy practice at his office/residence on the corner of Broad and Second streets where office fees ranged from 75 cents to $5. In 1901, Hood became the first physician licensed by the State of Nevada. After he left town, Hood was replaced by Dr. Pinninger who did not stay long. In 1909, Battle Mountain's Dr. G.F. Pope became first vice-president of the Nevada Medical Association.

Winnemucca hosted its annual Fifties Fever event this past weekend and Battle Mountain residents were among the attendees. Activities at the event included a car show, drag races, live music and various contests.
