ELKO - Every year since the economic recession of the country and budgetary downturn of higher education in the state of Nevada, college students have had to face the reality of what seems like discussions of ever increasing Tuition and Fee rates.
RENO - The Bureau of Land Management today announced that it is seeking public nominations for open positions on its 29 Resource Advisory Councils (RACs), which advise the BLM on public land issues. As published in a notice in the Federal Register, the BLM will consider nominations for 45 days.
CARSON CITY - Orders for the second of four commemorative medallions marking Nevada's 150th birthday begin Feb. 10 through the Nevada Legislative Gift Shop.
RENO - When the Nevada State Board of Wildlife Commissioners met recently in Las Vegas, its members tackled an agenda that included the establishment of big game hunting seasons for 2014 into 2015, including several "antlerless elk management" hunts that allow for combination deer and cow elk tags, combination bull elk and cow elk tags, spike elk hunts and Nevada's fourth bear hunt. Also on the agenda was the removal of fishing tackle restrictions on certain spans of the Truckee River.
HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleFor kids, snow means a time of sledding and building snowmen. For adults, snow can be quite unwelcome. Elvey Combs, owner of Enchanted Garden Nursery, shoveled snow recently outside of his business on Front Street. The National Weather Service has two observers in the Battle Mountain area. One is the official observer and one is a volunteer. The official person reported 3.3 inches of snow near the Battle Mountain Airport on Jan. 31 and 1 inch Feb. 4. According to the volunteer, who took measurements near downtown, 5.3 inches fell on Jan. 31 and 1.2 inches came down Feb. 4.
The Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum re-opened Feb. 5 after a two-month winter break.

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management Elko District Office is releasing for a 15-day public review a revised environmental assessment for the management and mitigation of drought impacted rangelands.
CARSON CITY - The American Public Human Services Association, on behalf of the Association of Administrators of the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC), today announced that Nevada is one of six states leading the nation in streamlining placement of children across state lines. Nevada was selected to participate in a national initiate to improve efficiency in the administration of ICPC - the program that establishes uniform legal and administrative procedures governing the interstate placement of children. Nevada, along with the District of Columbia, Florida, Indiana, South Carolina, and Wisconsin, will pilot the web-based program over the next 17 months.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety has delayed implementation of Assembly Bill 579 from the 2007 Legislative Session, scheduled for Feb. 1, pending further litigation.
RENO - Because art builds communities, the Nevada Arts Council is examining the efforts, wants and needs of towns across the state as it builds a three-year plan to support local efforts.
