Christmas tree permits available for purchase

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management, Battle Mountain District (Mount Lewis and Tonopah Field offices) are selling permits for Christmas trees. Christmas tree permits are $3 per tree plus a $1 road maintenance fee and are good through Dec. 25, 2013.

Applications being accepted for Christmas Alert until Dec. 14

Family Resource Center collecting donations

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Applications are being accepted until Dec. 14 for the Family Resource Center's Christmas Alert program, said Executive Director Jana Moyes, who said the program will probably assist around 100 families this year. Last year, it helped 110.

BLM Ely District accepting applications for temporary seasonal firefighters

ELY - The Bureau of Land Management Ely District is accepting applications for temporary seasonal firefighters. Applications will be accepted through Monday, March 31, 2014, but those submitted by Tuesday, Jan. 14, will receive first consideration.

Live nativity to be held in Austin Dec. 17

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - People from the local and surrounding areas are invited to enjoy a night of fun and holiday spirit on Dec. 17 at Austin's 18th Annual Live Nativity, hosted by the Austin Chamber of Commerce and the citizens of Austin.

Senior center in Battle Mountain kicks off the holiday season with annual bake sale and craft fair

JAN EHLERT • Special to the BugleThe Battle Mountain Senior Center bake sale and craft fair was held Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There were vendors selling handmade gift items and homemade baked goods. The seniors baked some great cookies, cakes and candies. Guests were treated to a wonderful festive atmosphere that kicked off the holiday season.

ESGR now accepting nominations for support freedom award

National Guard and Reserve asked to nominate employers

ARLINGTON, Va. - Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office, is now accepting nominations for the 2014 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defense's highest honor presented to civilian employers for exceptional support of their National Guard and Reserve employees. ESGR encourages Guardsmen and Reservists, or family members acting on their behalf, to submit nominations at www.FreedomAward.mil by Jan. 20, 2014.

Deadlines to deliver mail to active duty military personnel are coming soon

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Making sure those serving in the nation's armed forces receive their care packages from home in time for the holidays is a priority for friends and family members of military personnel serving around the world and for the U.S. Postal Service. 

California Trail Interpretive Center hosts free winter programs 

ELKO -The California Trail Interpretive Center staff is offering free winter programs through December. Presentations are at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday and include a variety of topics from Shoshone history and pioneer life, to Elko County history. 

Teaming up for seniors -

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleThe Battle Mountain Bugle, The Colt and the Battle Mountain General Hospital Long-term Care Facility have teamed up to make Christmas bright for local seniors. The Colt is hosting the Bugle's tree that contains the names and wishes of 18 seniors at the long-term care facility. Gifts should be new and wrapped and have the angel tags attached. They are due at the Bugle office by 1 p.m. on Dec. 20. They will be delivered Dec. 24 and opened by the seniors on Christmas Day. BLM releases final EIS for proposed Pan Mine Project west of Ely

ELY - The Bureau of Land Management's Ely District has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Midway Gold U.S., Inc.'s proposed Pan Mine Project in White Pine County, about 50 miles west of Ely. The BLM will issue a Record of Decision following a 30-day availability and review period that ends Dec. 19.

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - As Civil Air Patrol celebrates its 72nd anniversary, the all-volunteer service of 61,000 members looks to honor its founding members who, propelled by duty and love of country, valiantly defended their homeland during World War II.
