BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Rex Massey, who is with the Yucca Mountain Oversight Program for Lander County, presented the Annual Program Plan for oversight activities through Sept. 30, 2012, to commissioners at their Oct. 13 meeting. The Annual Program Plan sets forth all repository-related activities to be undertaken by Lander County over the coming year. The program plan established six primary activities:
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Battle Mountain Nevada District Office has announced the availability of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Proposed Phoenix Copper Leach Project with the publication of a notice in the Federal Register on Oct. 28.
Molly Hill is the local author of the book entitled "Jade" that was published on Oct. 4. "Jade" is the first of five books written in "The Shadow Night" series. On Nov. 5, Hill will have a book signing at the Battle Mountain Library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join! Junior high and high school readers are the intended audience. Books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Noble Nook, Kindle and at the Battle Mountain Library for the book-signing exhibit.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The organizers of the POD, community preparedness drill wish to thank everyone who participated for helping them make the first-ever drive thru POD drill a success.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Senior Center had visitors from the State of Nevada Aging and Disability Service Division. They met with our director, Sandi Smith, Gene Etcheverry, and a couple of seniors, Vera Smith and Helen Thompson.
Dad Ron Phillips took a stroll down Broad Street with his son, Rodney Phillips, 21 months, on his shoulders while Rodney munched on a cracker. The two were on their way to visit Ron Phillips' grandmother, Doris Phillips, at the Battle Mountain General Hospital Longterm Care Facility.
TONOPAH - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Battle Mountain District, Tonopah Field Office is seeking public comment on the Stone Cabin Complex Preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA), which addresses the need to remove approximately 505 excess wild horses from in and around the complex to bring the number of wild horses to the appropriate management level (AML) of 404 wild horses.
RENO - General Metals announced Oct. 31 that it retained a contractor to remove the old Independence Mill site to enable the company to proceed in development of its mine to begin production at the company's Independence Mine Project in the Battle Mountain Gold & Silver Mining District in Lander County.
JAN EHLERT BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Trick or treat for the youth of Battle Mountain started on Friday, Oct. 28. On this day the businesses treated all the little Battle Mountain tricksters to gobs of candy. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. the local trick or treaters visited the doors of all the businesses displaying the pumpkin page from the Battle Mountain Bugle. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. Kids wore their costumes and didn't need to cover them with a jacket of any sort. This was just the beginning of a sugar-filled weekend.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Xi Alpha Phi Sorority group held their 3rd Annual Witches Ball on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center. The group sold approximately 150 tickets to the ball. There was plenty of free food and a bar where guests could purchase alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Guests could get their pictures taken and everyone received a ticket for one free witches brew beverage.

Dolores Bruce was born in Battle Mountain. Her daughter Lavonne Osterberg was born in Winnemucca. Her granddaughter Jinni Best was born in Elko. Her great-granddaughter Chenae Sandoval was born in Elko. She is holding her great-great-grandson Paxton Jacob Sandoval, who was born in Elko on Oct. 20, 2011.
Recently a reader called the Bugle complimenting the flowers outside of the Battle Mountain Civic Center. The flowers have been planted and maintained for the past five years by Maria Ruvalcaba, a part-time custodian for the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority. She said she has put a lot of hard work into them over the years.
AUSTIN - Tyler Young from Boys Scouts of America troop # 210 accomplished his Eagle Scout project this summer. Young worked alongside 29 other volunteers, including cooks, wood cutters and wood splitters. The project entailed collecting, cutting and hauling 12 cords of wood from private property at Smith Creek Ranch in Reese River Valley to be donated to families in need.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority hosted their 10th Annual Chukar Tournament and Feed on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.This has turned into a highly successful state-of-the-art event attracting hunters and their families from all over Nevada and the surrounding states. This year a total of 197 hunters registered for the tournament, plus an extra 45 dinner tickets were sold to guests of hunters.
