Lander County moving forward with NFIP Community Rating System application

RENO - Summit Engineering Corporation, headquartered in Reno and with a satellite office in Elko, is assisting Lander County to enter the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS).

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On Oct. 15, Battle Mountain General Hospital/Clinic, in conjunction with Newmont Mining Corp., The Tire Factory, Barrick Cortez, Marigold Mining Company and Wells Fargo Bank, sponsored the Lander County Health Fair.

Deferred prosecution in theft case Kimberly Ellis' charges amended to two counts of theft

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The preliminary hearing for Kimberly Sherrie Ellis, 30, of Battle Mountain, who was charged originally by the District Attorney's Office with two counts of uttering forged instruments, both category D felonies, was continued.

Lander County Art Association brings artists together Member paintings currently being displayed at Battle Mountain General Hospital

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Art Association has been bringing artists together since 1985, said organization President Jonie Davenport. It is a non-profit group with 12 current members.

21st Century Afterschool Program marks fifth anniversary

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - This year Sept. 12 marked the fifth year that the 21st Century Afterschool Program was available to Lander County students in grades first through eighth.

Marshmallow wars at Jacob's Well -

Oct. 17 proved to be another competitive and fun time at Jacob's Well! Five contestants participated in the crusade to win a $25 gift certificate to Walmart. Ally Fisher, Morgan Fisher, Joe Youngblood, Marko Vallego and Arturo Serrano cleverly created homemade marshmallow guns to compete for the longest marshmallow shot. After three attempts, Morgan Fisher proved to be the best shooter, taking first in the marshmallow war! Congratulations to Morgan and all that participated!

Mill Creek campground gets a facelift

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District, partnered with Lander County Road and Bridge and several volunteers to complete a successful National Public Lands Day (NPLD) project.

Ranch Dog Challenge accepting entries Winnemucca even part of WSRRA rodeo finals

WINNEMUCCA, Nev. - The Wesern States Ranch Rodeo Association brings their National Finals Rodeo to Winnemucca Nov. 3 - 6. In addition to three big days of Ranch Rodeo action, there will also be jackpot team branding, jackpot team roping and jackpot bronc riding. One new event for the finals is the Ranch Dog Challenge

Battle Mountain woman arrested for trafficking in a controlled substance Preliminary hearings waived, case to continue onto district court

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Susan Elaine Tybo, of Battle Mountain, was arrested on Oct. 4 by the TRIDENT Narcotics Task Force for trafficking in a controlled substance - methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance for sale - methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a drug without a prescription.

Yucca Mountain Oversight Program plan presented to commissioners

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Rex Massey, who is with the Yucca Mountain Oversight Program for Lander County, presented the Annual Program Plan for oversight activities through Sept. 30, 2012, to commissioners at their Oct. 13 meeting. The Annual Program Plan sets forth all repository-related activities to be undertaken by Lander County over the coming year. The program plan established six primary activities:

BLM NOA Phoenix Copper DSEIS available for public comment

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Battle Mountain Nevada District Office has announced the availability of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Proposed Phoenix Copper Leach Project with the publication of a notice in the Federal Register on Oct. 28.

Local writer publishes book -

Molly Hill is the local author of the book entitled "Jade" that was published on Oct. 4. "Jade" is the first of five books written in "The Shadow Night" series. On Nov. 5, Hill will have a book signing at the Battle Mountain Library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join! Junior high and high school readers are the intended audience. Books are available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Noble Nook, Kindle and at the Battle Mountain Library for the book-signing exhibit.

Over 400 flu shots given in four hours

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The organizers of the POD, community preparedness drill wish to thank everyone who participated for helping them make the first-ever drive thru POD drill a success.

News from the Senior Center: Visitors

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Senior Center had visitors from the State of Nevada Aging and Disability Service Division. They met with our director, Sandi Smith, Gene Etcheverry, and a couple of seniors, Vera Smith and Helen Thompson.

Out for a walk -

Dad Ron Phillips took a stroll down Broad Street with his son, Rodney Phillips, 21 months, on his shoulders while Rodney munched on a cracker. The two were on their way to visit Ron Phillips' grandmother, Doris Phillips, at the Battle Mountain General Hospital Longterm Care Facility.
