Watch D.O.G.S. meetings held in Battle Mountain

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Watch D.O.G.S. program held their annual kick-off event on Tuesday, Sept. 20, for the elementary schools. Students from Eliza Pierce, Mary S. Black (Battle Mountain Elementary Schools) and Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School (ELES) gathered, along with their dads, stepdads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and other male role models at the Battle Mountain Civic Center to take part in a fun-filled event designed to help show everyone the importance of male role models in young children's lives. It is the goal of Watch D.O.G.S. coordinators to have a Watch D.O.G. in the Battle Mountain Elementary Schools and ELES every available day this school year.

Giving the gift of time to help others

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Beginning in October the community of Battle Mountain began to get the warm and fuzzy feeling it always gets when the fall holiday season comes upon us. Residents, organizations and businesses start looking at where they can pitch in to make sure the community has a great holiday season. At the end of the long year all of a sudden the atmosphere of giving, being thankful and being helpful to others in need takes over. Considering the economy the task is not easy, but in a small town like Battle Mountain great strength is always found somewhere.

State plans air permit for Mt. Hope Project Public comments due by Dec. 16

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Nevada Bureau of Air Pollution Control announced last week that it plans to issue an air quality operating permit for a proposed molybdenum mine in Eureka County.

First book published for local author Vampire novel 'Jade' on sale now

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - For Molly Hill, writing her first book was easy and exciting. She said she thought up the idea suddenly and then wrote constantly.

One-act plays -

4-H awards presented Nov. 1

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County 4-H annual awards were presented Nov. 1. The winners are as follows:Gold Award: Senior Bria Jones, Intermediate Cameron Thompson and Junior Trista McKenzie. Silver Award: Senior Dillon Thompson, Intermediate LaRae Tomera and Junior Kandise Baird. Bronze Award: Senior Tyson McKenzie, Intermediate Lezli Baird and Junior Thomas Baird.

Lander County shooting under investigation

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - According to a sheriff's office press release, on Nov. 14, Lander County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in a shooting south of Battle Mountain with a resident of Lander County after responding to a domestic disturbance call.

BMJHS students earn achievement awards

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The following Battle Mountain Junior High School students have earned Achievement Awards for the first quarter.

21st Century Afterschool Program hosts movie night

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The 21st Century Afterschool Program once again held a family movie night for the Battle Mountain community. "Cars 2" was shown on Nov. 10 at the Battle Mountain Civic Center (BMCC).

Lander County moves forward with Community Rating System

RENO - Summit Engineering and Lander County are currently working with Insurance Services Office (ISO)/Community Rating System Specialist (CRS) David Arkens to prepare the CRS application.A CRS new application visit was held on Nov. 8 with Arkens, Lander County officials and Steve Morton, with Summit Engineering. At this meeting, Lander County set forth what activities they were applying for and provided some documentation for those credits.

Newmont hoping to enhance Phoenix Mine with Copper Leach Project

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Newmont Mining Corporation has identified an exciting opportunity to enhance the Phoenix Mine. By building and operating a Copper Leach Project, it can use rock previously classified as waste rock (non-ore bearing) to produce additional copper, which will add to the value of the Phoenix Mine.

BMJHS Halloween Hall door decorating contest winners announced

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain Junior High School (BMJHS) held a Halloween Hall for the community on Oct. 27. As part of the event, BMJHS 21st Century Afterschool Program students participated in a door decorating contest. The winners were determined by student votes.

Colt donation -

In an effort to give back to the community, Alsaker Corporation decided to donate 10 percent of their sales for a limited time to the Family Resource Center. The company was happy to present a check to Family Resource Center Director Jana Moyes for $1,307.40. BLM Battle Mountain District involved in a wide range of multiple use projects

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain District of the BLM administers about 2,520,200 acres of land within Lander County (about 90 percent) and is involved in a wide-range of multiple use projects including hard rock mining, renewable energy development, recreation, habitat restoration and ranching.
