USFWS proposes protection for sage grouse along California-Nevada border

RENO - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to protect a population of sage grouse along the California-Nevada border as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

NHP troopers will include school visits in patrol

Cooperative Extension hosts Master Gardener training orientations

RENO - University of Nevada Cooperative Extension invites those interested in becoming trained Master Gardeners to attend an orientation on Nov. 4 or Nov. 13 to participate in the 2014 Master Gardener training course, running from Feb. 24 through April 16. 

SolarGenerations program accepting applications beginning Nov. 1

RENO - NV Energy's SolarGenerations program will accept applications for the next round of solar energy projects from Nov. 1 through 5 p.m. on Nov. 15. Successful applicants will be eligible for rebates to help offset installation costs for photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity.

State treasurer announces reduction in the cost of saving for college

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall announced recently that the Board of Trustees of the College Savings Plans of Nevada, which she chairs, has successfully negotiated to reduce expense ratios on investments in The Vanguard 529 College Savings Plan, a national college savings plan administered by the Treasurer's Office.

New dates for comment periods impacted by the shutdown

RENO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Nevada announces new dates for comment periods for two environmental assessments (EAs) that were open during the recent Federal government shutdown. The documents providing information for comments were not available on the BLM website from Oct. 1 through Oct. 16, 2013. The new dates reflect the number of days the comment periods overlapped the shutdown.

Battle Mountain overrun with ghouls and goblins on Halloween

As advertised, several businesses sponsored Harvest Fest 2013 in Battle Mountain on Oct. 31 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Local youth were invited to start their Halloween evening of trick-or-treating at the sponsoring businesses of Haney's Furniture, Wells Fargo, Battle Mountain Tire Factory, Chevron, CrazyBeautiful, The Owl Club, Pizza Factory, Atlas Towing and Recovery, Port of Subs and Quick Mart, Desert $ Stor N Mor, Conoco, Battle Mountain General Hospital and Clinic, The Flower Shop, Napa, Mills Pharmacy, Nevada Hotel, and Garden Gate Floral. The streets were filled with celebrities, superheroes, princesses, pirates, dogs, ghouls, zombies, witches, and any other characters that could be scared up to celebrate the Halloween holiday in Battle Mountain.

Firemen teach fire prevention at Christ Lutheran Preschool

The Pre-K and 3-4-year-old classes were visited by Battle Mountain Volunteer Firemen Donnie Negro, Chris Soule, and Jim Bob Unger on Oct. 14 and 17. The children learned to always give matches and lighters to an adult, how to extinguish fire on clothing by doing the "Stop, Drop, Cover Face and Roll" technique, and to call 911 to report a fire or any other emergency. The children were thrilled to ride in the fire engine after the presentation. Teachers followed up the firemen's visit with an extension activity in the Pre-K classes for "Stop, Drop, Cover Face and Roll," and the 3-4-year-old classes created a picture of a fire engine with collage materials. The firemen presented an excellent and fun introduction to fire prevention for Christ Lutheran Preschool students.
