Nevada tribes receive $1.8 million in grants from U.S. Department of Justice

LAS VEGAS - Two northern Nevada Indian tribes will receive over $1.8 million in U.S. Department of Justice grants to assist them enhance law enforcement practices and sustain crime prevention and intervention efforts, announced Nevada's U.S. Attorney, Daniel G. Bogden.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Jess Manuel Willer was sentenced Sept. 11 by Sixth Judicial District Judge Michael Montero to two to five years in prison for attempted child sexual abuse, a category C felony.

On Aug. 4, Lander County Committee Against Domestic Violence placed another concrete bench in Elquist Park honoring victims of domestic violence and their families.

CARSON CITY - The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation has corrected issues with the Internet claims filing system and urges claimants who were having difficulties to try the system again before attempting to call the unemployment call center to speak with a representative.

Marlie, we miss you

I would like to introduce you to a very special, likable working dog named Marlie. She became Harriet Brooks' guide dog in 2006. When Marlie was 18 months old, she was put in training for two years. She came from the Pilot Dog school in Columbus, Ohio.

Lander jobless rate remains low at 4.7 percent

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada's unemployment rate held steady at 9.5 percent in August, maintaining the highest jobless rate in the country even though it added 11,200 jobs from a month ago, state officials said last week.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A 19-year-old Lander County man pleaded guilty Sept. 17 to open or gross lewdness, a gross misdemeanor, at an arraignment in the Sixth Judicial District Court before Judge Richard Wagner.

Senior center gets new windows

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The senior center is spruced up with new windows. They really look nice. They should help to cut back on heating expenses this winter.

Partial campground closure at Wild Horse State Rec Area due to construction

ELKO - Campground improvements at Wild Horse State Recreation Area began Monday, Oct. 7, and will continue through Nov. 17. In order to complete these improvements, partial closure of the campground will be necessary. The shower and dump station facilities will remain available, but campsites within the park will be limited.
