Dispose of your unwanted prescription drugs April 27

Drugs to be collected at Jacob's Well in Battle Mountain and at the ambulance station in Austin

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lander County Community Health, among many local partners and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will give Lander County residents their first opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County has been ranked number four healthiest in the state in the Health Factors portion out of 16 counties in Nevada (Esmeralda County was not ranked), according to the fourth annual County Health Rankings, released recently by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - University of Nevada, Reno President Dr. Marc Johnson tried to reassure Lander County commissioners that the proposed reorganization of the university's Cooperative Extension program to bring it under the same leadership as the College of Agriculture will not combine the two programs.

ELKO - The Nevada Conservation Corps, a program of AmeriCorps, is accepting applications for seasonal volunteers to work outdoors in eastern Nevada. Successful applicants will receive a $3,500 living allowance for the summer, paid semimonthly; and upon completion of service a $1,468 education award that can be used to pay student loans or tuition to a Title IV accredited college.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County Community Health is organizing its first prescription drug take-back event on Saturday, April 27. This event coincides with the sixth National Take-Back initiative organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

NHP implements zero-tolerance enforcement week to curb distracted driving

ELKO - April is National Distracted Driving Month and the Nevada Highway Patrol implemented a zero-tolerance enforcement period that began April 22 and runs through April 26, as a strict traffic safety initiative to hopefully curtail the use of hand-held phones while motorists are driving.

USDA designates Nevada counties as natural disaster areas
