AmeriCorps seeks volunteers to work in eastern Nevada

ELKO - The Nevada Conservation Corps, a program of AmeriCorps, is accepting applications for seasonal volunteers to work outdoors in eastern Nevada. Successful applicants will receive a $3,500 living allowance for the summer, paid semimonthly; and upon completion of service a $1,468 education award that can be used to pay student loans or tuition to a Title IV accredited college.

NHP implements zero-tolerance enforcement week to curb distracted driving

ELKO - April is National Distracted Driving Month and the Nevada Highway Patrol implemented a zero-tolerance enforcement period that began April 22 and runs through April 26, as a strict traffic safety initiative to hopefully curtail the use of hand-held phones while motorists are driving.

RENO - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated Elko County as a primary natural disaster area due to damages and losses caused by the recent drought.

CARSON CITY - The Nevada state office of USDA Rural Development is accepting grant applications from nonprofits, communities, state agencies and federally designated tribes to assist development of small and emerging private business in rural Nevada. About $155,000 is available for eligible projects.

Battle Mountain man signs no contest agreement for assault with a deadly weapon

Amended criminal complaint alleges Ralph Burnett held knife to woman's face

BATTLE MOUNTAIN -Ralph John Burnett, of Battle Mountain, signed an agreement on April 23, which states that he is expected to plead no contest to assault with a deadly weapon, a category B felony, at his May 21 arraignment in the Sixth Judicial District Court, according to District Attorney Angie Elquist.
