So many angels -

COURTESY PHOTOThere were 13 names on the Battle Mountain Bugle's Angel Tree this year that were each split into two wish lists to provide gifts to residents at the Battle Mountain General Hospital and Longterm Care Facility. All of the names and wish lists were taken off of the tree which was set up at Mills Pharmacy, said Teri Spring, Battle Mountain Bugle office assistant. Spring and Bugle ad representative Kayla Love-Koseck dropped all the gifts off on Dec. 21 to be opened on Christmas Day. Shown above with the gifts are Richard Skinner and Jackie Edgar. Spring said the project was a success and the seniors were delighted to see all of the packages. Spring said she wanted to thank the community for its support.

Kingston Winter Bazaar attracts people from all over Smoky Valley

Event featured vendors, food and raffles

KINGSTON - The Kingston Winter Bazaar was held Dec. 1 at the Kingston Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and attracted people from Austin, Kingston and all over Smoky Valley.

Boatload of toys -

The Colt collected new toys for children in need this Christmas. The drive ran through Dec. 15. The goal was to collect enough toys to fill up a Smoker Craft fishing boat. The toys were donated to the Family Resource Center for their Christmas Alert program which gives food, hats, gloves, coats, scarves and toys to families in need at Christmas time.

Honored for service -

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleLander County Commissioner Ray Williams, Jr., (left) and Lander County Executive Director Gene Etcheverry received plaques to honor them at the Dec. 12 Lander County Commission meeting. This is Williams' last term serving on the board and Etcheverry resigned effective Dec. 31. Williams is ending his third term and 12th year as a commissioner. He served his first two terms from 1987 to 1994. Etcheverry has served as the executive director for six years and nine months.

Wells Fargo Foundation awards Jacob's Well a $4,500 grant to implement youth food program

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Christmas came early for Jacob's Well Youth Center (JWYC) when Sue Vandemark from Wells Fargo Bank dropped in to share that the Wells Fargo Foundation graciously awarded Jacob's Well a $4,500 grant to support the Food Program Initiative on Dec. 11.

Lander County families getting ready to celebrate the New Year

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - There are plenty of ways to welcome in the New Year and many Lander County families are doing it their own way with unique plans and fun family traditions.

Newmont donation helps Battle Mountain Recreation Center reach planning budget goal

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Newmont (www.newmont.com) donated $15,000 to the Battle Mountain Recreation Center. Shar Peterson, external relations representative, presented the check to board members on Nov. 5.

Two people honored for work done in the community

AUSTIN - Two people were honored by school board member Jan Morrison in Austin at a Christmas program held Dec. 13. Lander County School Board members choose members of the community to honor on a monthly basis.

A penguin Christmas -

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleIt's a bird. It's a plane. It's two penguins! Jessie and Brandy Walker got into the Christmas spirit with numerous Christmas decorations on the front lawn of their Gold Creek residence. Jessie Walker said it took him three days to put up all of the decorations which included wooden handmade and hand-painted carvings. The Walkers moved into their home just before Christmas last year and Jessie Walker said he wanted to go all out this year for the holidays.

Working in the snow -

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleAna Enriquez shovels snow on Dec. 13 in front of El Aguila Mexican Restaurant on Front Street. She worked hard to clear off the sidewalk for restaurant patrons.

Fun in the snow -

HEATHER HILL • The Battle Mountain BugleMom Sandra Sherve, back right, and her son, Richard Bochman, 12, back left, and daughter, Sonja Sherve, had plenty of fun in the snow that fell the evening of Dec. 12 and in the early morning hours of Dec. 13. The family made two snowmen and three snow forts in order to have a huge snowball fight at their Scott Street residence. According to the National Weather Service, five inches of snow fell in the Battle Mountain area by 7 a.m. on Dec. 13.

Winnemucca BLM district completes Owyhee Complex gather operations

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management, Winnemucca District, has completed its portion of the Owyhee Complex Wild Horse Gather. Gather operations were suspended for the holidays for the remainder of the Owyhee Complex. Operations will resume Jan. 4 in the Owyhee Herd Management Area managed by the Elko district office.
