BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began the Diamond Complex wild horse gather on Jan. 18. The BLM will gather and remove about 603 excess wild horses from the complex.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Frontier Community Coalition awarded Jacob's Well Youth Center (JWYC) a $2,000 grant to advance youth-based substance abuse prevention programs throughout 2013.
CARSON CITY - Gov. Brian Sandoval declared a state of emergency on Tuesday due to extreme winter conditions in Nevada. Prolonged periods of freezing temperatures have increased the demand for propane in the state of Nevada.
LAS VEGAS (AP) - The American Lung Association is giving Nevada an "F" for tobacco control and prevention efforts.
ELKO - Great Basin College Director of Continuing Education and Community Outreach, Angie De Braga, has been appointed to the Nevada Commission on Minority Affairs. The Legislative Appointment, announced in December by Christina Fuentes of the Department of Business and Industry, begins this month. De Braga was nominated by Great Basin College President Mark A. Curtis.
WINNEMUCCA - GBC Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Mike McFarlane and Vice President of Student Affairs Lynn Mahlberg announced the Dean's List of Great Basin College students for the Fall, 2011 semester. The Dean's List honors students with a 3.5 great point average for the semester.
ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management Elko and Winnemucca Districts concluded the Owyhee Complex wild horse gather on Jan. 16. The BLM removed 871 wild horses from the herd management areas (HMAs) in the Complex, 140 were released back to the range within the Owyhee HMA and fertility control vaccine was applied to 46 mares prior to release.

As we move into calving season for many ranchers in the area, it is important to follow a few basic management tips to reduce calf death loss and ensure cows are healthy for the upcoming breeding season.
