2012 Fire season rehabilitation under way

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is working with other state and federal agencies to begin rehabilitation of state and private lands and critical wildlife habitat damaged by the 2012 wildfire season. Over 680,000 acres burned statewide. Additionally, more than 350 miles of bulldozer line, constructed on both public and private lands to suppress these fires, requires rehabilitation to prevent erosion and the spread of invasive plant species.

EUREKA (AP) - Conservationists are trying to put the brakes on plans to mine hundreds of millions of pounds of the metallic element molybdenum from an open pit mine in north-central Nevada.

Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team arrests suspected meth trafficker

ELKO - An investigation initiated by the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team (TRIDENT) led to the Dec. 18 arrest of Veronica Abarca-Fregoso, 34, a suspected major source of supply of methamphetamine throughout the central region of rural Nevada, according to a news release from TRIDENT.

Lander County's unemployment rate up slightly in November

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada's unemployment rate dropped to 10.8 percent in November, the lowest it's been in more than three years and the most significant monthly improvement since April 2005, state officials said.

Workshop attendees can earn continuing education credits

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering a Continuing Education Workshop and Pesticide Applicator Training on Wed., Jan. 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The training will be held live in Reno and available via videoconference in 11 other locations throughout Nevada.

Battle Mountain seniors enjoy holiday season

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Baked ham and all of the trimmings was served on Dec. 14 as the traditional Christmas dinner to all of the seniors. Attendance was lower than usual due to the snow that came the night before, but the snow helped to bring in the holiday spirit. It is always good to see many people we haven't seen for a long time and have a good visit.
