BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Sober Seniors, a group of students and parents dedicated to holding a sober Battle Mountain High School graduation party, is selling holiday wreaths and Pete's chorizos to raise funds.

Red Ribbon Week helps to combat drug abuse

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Red Ribbon Week, a national program, was held in Battle Mountain from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1 at Battle Mountain Elementary Schools, Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School and Battle Mountain Junior High School.

Achievement Awards

DEBRA REID - The Lovelock Review-MinerLast week, Carol Shank and her fellow county commissioners presented achievement awards to volleyball coach Shauna Bake and Pershing High principal Russell Fecht. The school's volleyball and football teams won the state tournaments in their divisions.

Oh, Christmas Tree

Pershing County workers install a 21-foot-tall Christmas tree outside the courthouse in Lovelock on Monday. The tree is being decorated for Saturday evening's tree-lighting ceremony following the Parade of Lights. Christmas trees are available from the Lion's Club at the corner of Cornell Avenue and 8th Street. Proceeds from the tree sales support local student scholarships and activities sponsored by the club.

NV Energy donates Snowcat and trailer to Lander County Search and Rescue

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - NV Energy donated a Snowcat and a trailer for hauling the vehicle to Lander County Search and Rescue.

Live nativity to be held in Austin Dec. 11

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - People from Austin, Kingston and the surrounding areas are invited to enjoy a night of fun and holiday spirit on Dec. 11 at Austin's 17th Annual Live Nativity, hosted by the Austin Chamber of Commerce and the citizens of Austin.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management released its tentative fall-winter schedule for gathering wild horses and burros from overpopulated herds on drought-stricken western public rangelands.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On Wednesday, Nov. 28, Sondra Torgerson and 51 students from Battle Mountain High School attended a documentary film directed by Lee Hirsch entitled "Bully."

Students can take center stage in Nevada Poetry Out Loud program

RENO - High school students can take center stage in the Nevada Poetry Out Loud program that offers students a chance to recite poetry for a chance to win cash prizes and a trip to Washington D.C. Registration for the competition is open to students and teachers through Dec. 31, according to Mary Jane Dorofachuk, arts learning program coordinator for the Nevada Arts Council.

Battle Mountain High School food drive

There were 44 students who participated Dec. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. going door to door. They were able to collect 2,508 items of canned or boxed food items that were given to the Family Resource Center. The quilts range in size from baby quilts to full size quilts. BMHS quilting teacher, Jill Paull, said she is very proud of their hard work and giving spirit, and hopes to have more quilts to donate this spring.
