WINNEMUCCA - NV Energy electric customers in Midas and several ranches in the surrounding area will be affected by a Thursday, Nov. 8, power outage needed to accommodate the installation of a new transformer at an electrical substation located a few miles southwest of Midas. The outage will begin at 7:30 a.m. and is expected last for about six to eight hours. Newmont's Midas Mine will also be affected by the construction-related outage.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Thanks to the success of the Kingston Outdoor Market that was held Sept. 1, there will be a Kingston Winter Bazaar to be held Dec. 1 at the Kingston Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County School Board recognized six individuals Oct. 10 for contributing to the school and community.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - No bids were received by Oct. 24 on the house at 480 W. Tule St. that was built by Battle Mountain High School students. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is currently for sale for $147,000, Superintendent Jim Squibb said.
ELKO - Newmont Mining Corporation announced its employees have pledged more than $1.08 million to the NMC Legacy Fund for 2013 through its employee giving program. These pledges will be matched dollar for dollar by Newmont, bringing the total funding for local nonprofit organizations to $2.16 million.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - October has been a warm month here in Battle Mountain. All of our trees are now losing their leaves that have been a beautiful gold-red color. Ervin and I took a trip to southern Utah to see the canyons. We visited Kolob canyon. We saw the canyon early in the morning just when the sun was peeking over the mountains. The colors were purple, pink, gold and many shades of red. We were able to take our car on the tour. Later we drove thru to Zion National Park. The traffic was constant and we had trouble parking.
AUSTIN - Austin Schools Annual Halloween Carnival, held on Oct. 25, was well-attended with many guests participating in various activities including a lasagna dinner, a cake walk, a haunted house, a sponge toss, a dart throw and other fun games.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County Convention and Tourism, Newmont Mining Corporation, Lander County, the Bureau of Land Management - Battle Mountain District Office, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife have signed the Willow Creek Enhancement Program.
The Newmont Mining Corp. Legacy Fund recently donated $6,720 to the Lander County Committee Against Domestic Violence (LCCADV). This is a staff/company donation. The NMC Legacy Fund is derived by employee donations that are matched dollar for dollar by Newmont.
