Christ Lutheran Preschool holds open house

Christ Lutheran Preschool celebrated its 10th anniversary during an open house on Sept. 24 with 112 family members participating in a tour of the classrooms to see what their children and grandchildren are learning. Many stayed for the picnic dinner prepared and served by members of Christ Lutheran Church. Christ Lutheran Preschool currently has an enrollment of 59 students with openings still available in the 3- to 4-year-old classes and Pre-K classes.

Commissioners name October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners named October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month for the county at their Oct. 11 meeting. October is already named as national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

GBC to host Student Success Workshop

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Students at Great Basin College are well into the fall semester, and may now be anticipating mid-term exams. That anticipation can sometimes turn to anxiety. In response, GBC Student Services Retention Office and the Academic Success Center are sponsoring a series Student Success Workshops.

Plenty of volunteer opportunities at Jacob's Well Youth Center

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Jacob's Well Youth Center offers an array of volunteer opportunities throughout the year.The biggest need is for volunteers to supervise youth Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Volunteers are essential in keeping the doors open for the youth of Battle Mountain.

Barrick donates to new Battle Mountain Recreation Center

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Barrick Gold of North America presented a donation check of $15,000 to the Battle Mountain Recreation Center, a newly formed organization that is working to build a community recreation center.

County looking for CDBG grant ideas

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - This year, Lander County will be able to submit two Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) applications to the state CDBG program as it was able to do last year, said Community Services Officer Gina Little.

Planned power outage affects Midas, ranches

WINNEMUCCA - NV Energy electric customers in Midas and several ranches in the surrounding area will be affected by a Thursday, Nov. 8, power outage needed to accommodate the installation of a new transformer at an electrical substation located a few miles southwest of Midas. The outage will begin at 7:30 a.m. and is expected last for about six to eight hours. Newmont's Midas Mine will also be affected by the construction-related outage.

Kingston Winter Bazaar to be held Dec. 1

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Thanks to the success of the Kingston Outdoor Market that was held Sept. 1, there will be a Kingston Winter Bazaar to be held Dec. 1 at the Kingston Community Hall from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

School board gives recognition awards

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County School Board recognized six individuals Oct. 10 for contributing to the school and community.

No bids received on house built by high school students

House currently for sale for $147,000

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - No bids were received by Oct. 24 on the house at 480 W. Tule St. that was built by Battle Mountain High School students. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is currently for sale for $147,000, Superintendent Jim Squibb said.

Newmont Mining Corp. employees pledge record amount to NMC Legacy Fund

ELKO - Newmont Mining Corporation announced its employees have pledged more than $1.08 million to the NMC Legacy Fund for 2013 through its employee giving program. These pledges will be matched dollar for dollar by Newmont, bringing the total funding for local nonprofit organizations to $2.16 million.
