Generous donation from Barrick to Lander county Hospice

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County Hospice would like to thank Barrick for its generous donation. Lander County Hospice will be using the funds to help with the improvements that are needed on the building hospice is purchasing. The building is located on 326 W. Front St. and hospice officials would like to have this store as a gift and community store. The store will be home to the hospice office and also a high-end thrift store, along with a fantastic place for the talented people of the community to show and donate or consign crafts they have created.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners unanimously awarded a bid for a new fire truck for Austin to Blanchat Manufacturing.

Grand opening held for new Parent Involvement and Resource Center

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County School District opened the doors of the new Parent Involvement and Resource Center (PIRC) to local families on Sept. 19 from 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Men step up to be Heroes in the Hallways of Battle Mountain schools

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Roughly 275 dads, stepdads, granddads, uncles, big brothers and K - 8 students showed up for the fourth annual WATCH D.O.G.S. dads and kids event held on Sept. 27.

Battle Mountain homecoming royalty -

Battle Mountain seniors Sammantha Cory and Mason Burkart were crowned the 2012 homecoming queen and king, respectively, at halftime of the Longhorns' varsity football game with West Wendover on Friday. Other queen candidates included Abbie Mikelson, Kimberly Abrajan, Daisy Hernandez and Angelica Cardenas. The king candidates included Kody Schoorl, Eric Frakes, Tugi Cordova and Dwight Douglas.

BLM, Forest Service, & Nevada Division of Forestry lifting western Nevada fire restrictions

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office, the Carson & Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and the Nevada Division of Forestry's Sierra Forest Fire Protection District announce the lifting of fire restrictions that have been in place since June 18, 2012.

BLM Releases Final EIS for the Mount Hope Moly Project

Battle Mountain - The Bureau of Land Management, Battle Mountain District, Mount Lewis Field Office, has released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Eureka Moly LLC's Mount Hope Molybdenum Mine. The BLM will issue a final decision after a 30-day comment period is completed.

Early voting to run from Oct. 20 - Nov. 2

People encouraged to vote early

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Early voting starts on Oct. 20 and will run until Nov. 2 at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.

Fun Run/Walk to be held to raise domestic violence awareness

Event scheduled for Oct. 20

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Committee Against Domestic Violence's Seventh Annual Fun Run/Walk will be held Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. The event begins and ends at Elquist Park. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m.

Goldcorp - Marigold Mine donates new equipment to the school district

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Representatives from Goldcorp - Marigold Mine gathered at Battle Mountain Junior High School to donate new equipment to the Lander County School District on Oct. 3.

588 flu vaccines administered at Point of Dispense drill

Event held in conjunction with the health fair

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - There were 588 free flu vaccines administered at the Point of Dispense (POD) drill held Oct. 6 that was headed up by Battle Mountain's Community Health Nurse Office and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).

Battle Mountain boys soccer team drop home matches

The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team played host to two Division I-A schools in Lowry and Elko last week. Both schools are among the best in the Ruby Mountain League. The Longhorns took on Lowry on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and lost 12-2 to the Buckaroos. The Indians came to town on Friday and beat the Longhorns 8-0. Battle Mountain hosted Rite of Passage on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. Battle Mountain hosts Spring Creek Friday at 4 p.m.

Lady Longhorns play host to Division I-A foes Lowry and Elko

The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team had the tough task of hosting two of the top teams in the Ruby Mountain League last week. The Lady Longhorns faced Lowry on Tuesday, Oct. 9, and lost 8-0 to the Lady Bucks. The league-leading Indians came to town on Friday and beat Battle Mountain 7-0. The Lady Longhorns traveled to Lovelock to play Pershing County on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Nighthawks won the game 30-0, scoring all 30 points in the first half of play. The Longhorns close out their season on Friday with a trip to Lovelock to play Pershing County.
