Point of Dispense drill will help prepare for mass inoculation event

Numerous agencies to take part in event to be held in conjunction with the health fair

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain's Community Health Nurse Office and the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) are heading up a Point of Dispense (POD) drill that will not only give out free flu shots, but help prepare the community in case of an emergency in which mass inoculations are needed, said Reita Newgard, administrative assistant at the Community Health Nurse Office, who will be serving as the operations sections chief for the event.

Safe Haven returns to Battle Mountain Oct. 12

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain Arts Presenters will present Safe Haven at the Battle Mountain Civic Center on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. This is the fourth time that the band has performed in Battle Mountain and they have built up quite a local following.

Veterans service officer to visit Battle Mountain Oct. 10

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Veterans Service Officer Tim Shepard, from the Nevada Office of Veterans Services, will visit the Battle Mountain Civic Center on Oct. 10 from noon - 6 p.m. as part of a continuing effort to reach out to veterans in rural areas of the state.

WINNEMUCCA - Scrap Domestic Violence (ScrapDV) is set to launch No More, Know More in northern Nevada on Oct. 1 with plans to maintain the campaign throughout National Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Driver's education at Great Basin College

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Great Basin College is offering an online driver's education course beginning Oct. 9. Course topics include: rules of the road and traffic laws; defensive driving habits; how to navigate a roundabout; and buying, insuring, and maintaining a vehicle.

Houston Lucas' cancer in remission

Teen and family say they are thankful for outpouring of community support

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Local teenager Houston Lucas, who began his battle with large-cell lymphoma on April 27, has recently had his cancer declared in remission by his doctors, he said.

T-shirt winners -

The Lander County Committee Against Domestic Violence announced the winners of its "design the next T-shirt contest" for 2012. The grand prize winner was Nadia Soto whom not only won $100 but also will have her design on this years' T-shirt that will be handed out to people that participate in the 7th Annual Fun Run/Walk that will be taking place on Oct. 20. Bingo night held to raise funds for woman with aggressive cancer

More than 200 people turn out for event

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - More than 200 people turned out for a bingo night held on Sept. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center to raise money for Nancy Medford, who was diagnosed around two to three months ago with an aggressive form of melanoma.

High school to get new gymnasium bleachers

Roofing and painting projects almost finished
