Handler/dog team slated to hit the streets in 2013

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - If all goes as planned, the beginning of 2013 should see a new narcotics detector dog team hitting the streets of Lander County for the Lander County Sheriff's Office.

CARSON CITY - The U.S. Department of Education today approved Nevada's request for a waiver from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) in exchange for a state-developed plan designed to prepare all students for college and career readiness, substantially raise the achievement of the lowest achieving students, and support effective teaching and administration.

BMHS roof construction under way

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Construction has started to install a new roof and paint on the Battle Mountain High School. The contractor will be tearing off and disposing of old material and reinstalling the new roof system.

Medicare prescription drug premiums to remain steady for third straight year

Coverage improves and out-of-pocket savings grow as a result of the health care law

WASHINGTON - Average basic premiums for Medicare prescription drug plans are projected to remain constant in 2013, Health and Human Services Secretary (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius announced. The average 2013 monthly premium for basic prescription drug coverage is expected to be $30. Average premiums for 2012 were projected to be $30 and ultimately averaged $29.67. At the same time, since the law was enacted, seniors and people with disabilities have saved $3.9 billion on prescription drugs as the Affordable Care Act began closing the "donut hole" coverage gap.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Kingston Volunteer Fire Department annual picnic that was held at the Kingston Orchard and Lee Baker Park on Aug. 4 attracted a crowd of around 175 people, which was more than last year, said firefighter Shannon Thiss.

DA mulling charges for Ray Williams III offenses

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County District Attorney Angie Elquist said her office is still reviewing the alleged offenses for Justice of the Peace candidate Ray Williams III, and she said she will let the Bugle know when a decision is made. She said she is engaged in negotiations.

State treasurer announces another record-breaking year in returning unclaimed property

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall recently sent a letter to the Governor's Office and to legislators informing them that her Unclaimed Property Division has completed another banner year, returning nearly $33 million to Nevadans and other rightful owners.

USDA directory records more than 7,800 farmers markets

WASHINGTON - Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan recently announced a 9.6 percent increase in National Farmers Market Directory listings. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's directory, a database published online at farmersmarkets.usda.gov, identifies 7,864 farmers markets operating throughout the United States. The information collected in the directory is self-reported data provided voluntarily by farmers market managers through an annual outreach effort. Last year, USDA's directory listed 7,175 markets.
