BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has served persons in need of assistance since 1973; however, its flagship programs are the Home Companion programs, which are designed to extend the time seniors can remain independent in their own homes, rather than be prematurely institutionalized. RSVP has partnered with Newmont Mines to bring more services to Lander County.
Fourteen Lander County residents showed up to the Democratic presidential caucus held Jan. 21 at the Super 8 in Battle Mountain. No one volunteered to serve as a delegate and there will be no Lander County Democratic convention. Various draft platform resolutions were voted on. Ruth McKinsey (center) and Sheila Miller (left) helped Frank Whitman, of Austin, sign in at the event. Miller and McKinsey co-coordinated the event and Miller served as chair. BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain High School drama class students gave their all in their performance of "Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine," a two-act murder mystery comedy, which featured eight drama class students and three last-minute fill-ins. The event was held at the Civic Center. Dinner started at 6 p.m. and the play began at 7:15 p.m.The dinner theater play was a success, said Jacqueline Lindsey, the high school English and drama teacher. She pointed out that six of the eight students from the drama class who performed had never before been on a stage.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Historical Society in Battle Mountain is working hard to preserve local history and present it to the community in the new Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum which has been in the works for around the past nine years and is slated to be completed this year.
RENO - The NV Energy Foundation contributed more than $342,000 to 61 organizations statewide, including multi-year commitments, during the fourth quarter of 2011.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners voted unanimously at their Jan. 26 meeting to uphold the recommendation of the Lander County Planning Commission and approve the proposal to amend the Lander County Code 15.24.030(D) to change the allowable age of mobile and manufactured homes from five to 15 years old and to propose an ordinance for introduction during the Feb. 9 county commission meeting. A public hearing will be held at a later date before the ordinance can be passed.

RENO - It's simple arithmetic: Breezy weather plus wind turbines equals energy savings for the Lander County School District.
ELY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District, Egan Field Office, and Battle Mountain District, Tonopah Field Office, concluded the Pancake Complex Wild Horse Gather on Saturday, Feb. 11. The BLM gathered 1,115 wild horses from the Pancake and Sand Springs West herd management areas (HMA) and Jakes Wash Herd Area (HA), located about 30 miles west of Ely or 80 miles northeast of Tonopah. The BLM released 287 wild horses, including 124 mares treated with the fertility vaccine PZP, back to the HMAs.
