Nevada State GOP Caucus to be held locally Feb. 4

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Nevada State GOP Caucus will be held Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Radon programs offered Jan. 10 in Lander County

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - January is National Radon Action Month and the Nevada Radon Education Program of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) will offer two radon programs on Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Lander County Cooperative Extension Office, 815 N. Second St., in Battle Mountain, with video conferencing in Austin at the Austin High School video room, 200 Hwy. 305 North.

Welcoming a warm and sunny day

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On Dec. 16 everyone welcomed a warm, sunny day. The Senior Center celebrated with a Christmas dinner. Four hams were cooked and sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, salad and rolls were included in the dinner. Apple cobbler was served for dessert. Everyone thought the dinner was very good.

Department of Agriculture to host pesticide applicator workshop

SPARKS - The Nevada Department of Agriculture and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension are offering a Pesticide Applicator Training Workshop on Feb. 2. The training will be held by videoconference in Reno and broadcast to Lovelock, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Eureka, Fallon and Tonopah.

Battle Mountain Volunteer Fire Department hosts 74th Annual New Years Raffle

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain Volunteer Fire Department (BMVFD) held their 74th Annual Raffle Jan. 1 at the Battle Mountain Fire Hall.

Welsch takes over as field representative for RSVP

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has served persons in need of assistance since 1973; however, its flagship programs are the Home Companion programs, which are designed to extend the time seniors can remain independent in their own homes, rather than be prematurely institutionalized. RSVP has partnered with Newmont Mines to bring more services to Lander County.

Democratic caucus

Fourteen Lander County residents showed up to the Democratic presidential caucus held Jan. 21 at the Super 8 in Battle Mountain. No one volunteered to serve as a delegate and there will be no Lander County Democratic convention. Various draft platform resolutions were voted on. Ruth McKinsey (center) and Sheila Miller (left) helped Frank Whitman, of Austin, sign in at the event. Miller and McKinsey co-coordinated the event and Miller served as chair. BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Tickets for Christ Lutheran Preschool's 9th annual February Family Fun Festival Drawing to be held Feb. 16 are now available for purchase.

High school dinner theater attracts sold-out crowd 'Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine' performed Jan. 12 at Civic Center

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain High School drama class students gave their all in their performance of "Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine," a two-act murder mystery comedy, which featured eight drama class students and three last-minute fill-ins. The event was held at the Civic Center. Dinner started at 6 p.m. and the play began at 7:15 p.m.The dinner theater play was a success, said Jacqueline Lindsey, the high school English and drama teacher. She pointed out that six of the eight students from the drama class who performed had never before been on a stage.

February Little Horns of the Month announced

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The February Little Horns of the Month at Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School include Alexi Diaz, Isabella DeAllah, Erik Martinez, Paige Reinholz, Adrian Gonzalez and Avry Tucker.

Lander County Historical Society working hard to preserve Battle Mountain history Group became a nonprofit in 1979

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Historical Society in Battle Mountain is working hard to preserve local history and present it to the community in the new Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum which has been in the works for around the past nine years and is slated to be completed this year.

NV Energy supports statewide organizations with more than $342,000 in grants during fourth quarter 2011

RENO - The NV Energy Foundation contributed more than $342,000 to 61 organizations statewide, including multi-year commitments, during the fourth quarter of 2011.

Age of new mobile and manufactured homes to be reviewed

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners voted unanimously at their Jan. 26 meeting to uphold the recommendation of the Lander County Planning Commission and approve the proposal to amend the Lander County Code 15.24.030(D) to change the allowable age of mobile and manufactured homes from five to 15 years old and to propose an ordinance for introduction during the Feb. 9 county commission meeting. A public hearing will be held at a later date before the ordinance can be passed.

Local students take part in Rachel's Challenge

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Rachel's Challenge returned to Battle Mountain on Jan. 31 for year two, Rachel's Legacy.
