BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A Notice of Availability of the Draft EIS for the Mount Hope Project published by the Environmental Protection Agency in the Federal Register on Dec. 16 corrects the close of a 90-day comment period to March 1, 2012.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain resident, Bill Oxley, 48, was arraigned in the Argenta Justice Court Dec. 5 for an official charge of harassment, a second offense, stemming from a May 15 case in which he threatened to shoot and kill Mike Johnson and his family, according to the District Attorney's Office criminal complaint.
HEATHER SINGER • People in Lander County have really gotten into the Christmas spirit. Homes all across the county are boasting an abundance of Christmas lights, garland, wreaths and other decorations this year. Jennie and Dennis McKenzie went all out at their Gold Creek Avenue home and decorated their yard full of blow-up characters as well as a Santa Claus Ferris wheel and even Santa Claus himself.
The Public Works Department, along with around 10 helpers from the Nevada Division of Forestry, decorated the Lander County Courthouse on Dec. 6 with lights and garland. The courthouse is decorated every year and this year saw a new set of garland, said Public Works Foreman Jake Edgar.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School (ELES) students held their annual Christmas Musicals during the first part of December.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Colt Casino held its second-annual Supermarket Sweep contest to benefit Battle Mountain residents with a three-minute grocery shopping spree on Monday, Dec. 19.

A total of six 40 kw turbines were erected earlier this month behind the Austin Schools. The Lander County School District's wind turbine projects consist of three 40 kw turbines at Lemaire Elementary School and the six 40 kw turbines at the Austin Schools for a total project of 360 kws. The turbines are located behind each school.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The fifth-grade students at Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School presented their Christmas musical "A Show-Stopping Christmas" to their friends and families on Wednesday, Dec. 7. In order to accommodate the varying work schedules of the students' family members, they held two showings, with one at 1:30 p.m. and another at 6 p.m.The students worked hard readying themselves for their big day, when they would dazzle their loved ones with their holiday song and dance numbers. The students practiced for several weeks, for 30 to 45 minutes at a time under the direction of part-time music teacher Judy Dahl. Kristine Taylor accompanied on the piano.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain Arts Presenters will present The Tarantellas on Jan. 26. The Tarantellas are a remarkable acoustic duo that specializes in playing the "legendary songs of Italy."
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - With the tremendous support of the families of students attending Christ Lutheran Preschool, members of the congregation of Christ Lutheran Church and a grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a generous Christmas Alert basket was delivered to a very appreciative family.
Battle Mountain resident Louis Burt got walked by his dog along Broyles Ranch Road. Burt took advantage of the recent warmer than usual temperatures to go out walking with his pal, Lobo, a male husky mix, that he adopted from a friend about six years ago.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The students in Judy Dahl's sixth-grade choir, band and guitar classes held their annual Christmas concert on Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they performed "North Pole Diaries."
