Winnemucca Junior High School Honor Roll -- 8th Grade

WINNEMUCCA - The following eighth grade Winnemucca Junior High School students were named to the first quarter honor roll for the 2012 - 2013 year.

Friends of Nevada Wilderness, partners plan fire rehabilitation work near Paradise Valley

WINNEMUCCA - This past summer, wildfires moved across northern Nevada. The fires scorched private and public lands alike, including acreage in designated wilderness areas. These wildfires will greatly affect the community members of Winnemucca, Paradise Valley, McDermitt and other nearby locations.

Recognizing National Caregiver Month

WINNEMUCCA - Meetings for creating a Nevada Plan for Alzheimer's and related dementias have concluded. Our final product includes 22 recommendations for action during the 2013 Nevada Legislative session. Although some items had to be dropped by the wayside due to time constraints and bill requirements, the document is powerful Frustration after the September meeting when I felt rural Nevadans were being shoved aside turned to relief and joy as our Task Force reviewed each suggestion.

Newmont Mining Corp. employees pledge record amount to NMC Legacy Fund

ELKO - Newmont Mining Corporation announced its employees have pledged more than $1.08 million to the NMC Legacy Fund for 2013 through its employee giving program. These pledges will be matched dollar for dollar by Newmont, bringing the total funding for local nonprofit organizations to $2.16 million.

WINNEMUCCA - Two local entities have joined forces to ensure that every Humboldt County foster child has a merry Christmas.

BLM to begin Owyhee Complex wild horse gather

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office (HRFO); and the Elko District, Tuscarora Field Office (TFO) will initiate the Owyhee Complex Wild Horse Gather on or about Monday, Nov. 26, 2012. The Owyhee complex is located approximately 60 miles north of Midas in Elko and Humboldt counties and is comprised of the Owyhee, Snowstorm Mountains, Little Owyhee, Little Humboldt and Rock Creek Herd Management Areas (HMAs).

RELAY FOR LIFE OF WINNEMUCCA RECOGNIZED AT REGIONAL SUMMIT

WINNEMUCCA - American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Winnemucca took place on July 21-22. This 24-hour event was the culmination of a fundraising season supported by 378 registered participants, including 38 cancer survivors, forming 32 teams. Together, with help from members of the Winnemucca community and surrounding areas, these Relayers worked diligently over the course of several months to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Harvest Potluck Dinner

About 276 people feasted on turkey, mashed potatoes and side dishes, a crowd that was down slightly from last year, organizers said. The meal was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McArthur Avenue and sponsored by the Winnemucca Ministerial Association.

New supervisor selected for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

OGDEN, Utah - Intermountain Regional Forester Harv Forsgren announced that William "Bill" Dunkelberger will serve as the supervisor for the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Dunkelberger will have the responsibility for managing 6.3 million acres in Nevada and eastern California.
