City council to consider zoning variance for hotel

WINNEMUCCA - Winnemucca Hotels LLC has requested a zoning variance from the city to increase the building height to 45 feet to accommodate a proposed three-story hotel at 460 East Winnemucca Boulevard.

WINNEMUCCA - If you went through Winnemucca Junior High School in the late '70s or early '80s, you may remember the librarian Barbara Foree, and if you don't recognize the name from that time it may come to mind when on one of the occasions your regular teacher was out you tried to play sink the sub, but she didn't go under.

School board meets Tuesday Oct. 23

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County School Board of Trustees will be holding its next meeting on Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. in the district office meeting room.

Veterans Day Parade slated for Nov. 11

WINNEMUCCA - The 12th Annual Veterans Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Parade participants will congregate on Railroad Street in front of the Mineshaft beginning at 10:30 a.m.; the parade will begin promptly at 11 a.m. and end at the parking lot of Kafoury Armstrong on First Street.

Saddle-up for St. Jude's ride raises $3,486

WINNEMUCCA - The annual Saddle-up for St. Jude's horseback ride was held on Oct. 13 at C-Horse Ranch. The weather could not have been better for the leisurely 11-mile ride through the desert, organizers said. After the ride, participants were treated to a BBQ with more games and prizes back at the ranch. There were a total of 19 riders.

Man arrested on suspicion of shooting at another person

WINNEMUCCA - Nicholas Henry Holley, 20, of Battle Mountain, was arrested Saturday evening after deputies and other law enforcement officials were notified that he fired a handgun at an individual on his front porch that morning, according to a Humboldt County Sheriff's Office news release.

EPA to meet with McDermitt residents on Tuesday

WINNEMUCCA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be hosting a public meeting this Tuesday, Oct. 23, to bring McDermitt residents up to date on its studies of arsenic and mercury levels in area soils.

WINNEMUCCA -The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary has kicked off its first annual "Koats for Kids" drive-just in time for the cold winter months.

Second suspect sentenced in copper wire theft case

WINNEMUCCA - Marci Leanne Sorensen, one of the three defendants suspected of stealing copper wire from Union Pacific Railroad, was sentenced to 12 to 36 months jail time, suspended, with probation for 60 months in court Monday.

The Crooked Jades on stage tonight at the Martin

WINNEMUCCA - Great Basin Arts and Entertainment is bringing a wonderful, and sort of twisted, old time band back to the Martin on Friday night. For the first time since 2008 the popular Crooked Jades from San Francisco will appear at 7 p.m. in the banquet room at the Martin Hotel on Friday, Oct. 26.

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunCounty Commission Seat A candidates Joyce Sheen and Marlene Brissenden visited Winnemucca Grammar School Tuesday morning to speak with third grade students about important issues in our county and answer questions. Students had questions prepared for the Q & A session to ask if called upon. The students' concerns ranged from how to control the dust problem in our community and what can be done to stop burglaries. Brissenden encouraged all of the students to learn about their local government, because knowing what goes on makes you that much smarter. Sheen told students that she hopes they encourage their parents to vote and that, when old enough, they make voting important in their own lives.

A chilly night for football

Alondra Ramos, left, and Irma Mendoza, both 10th graders at Lowry High, brave temperatures in the mid-30s on a cold evening under the lights. The Buckaroos beat Churchill County 21-7 and earn a spot in the playoffs.

Snow brings icy roads

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the SunThe first snowfall of the season brought slick roads as well last week. The Nevada Highway Patrol said this Dodge Dakota hit a slick spot near the Rose Creek overpass west of Winnemucca. The driver lost control on the snowy, icy overpass, the NHP said, causing the pickup to overturn and roll several times in the median of I-80. Both occupants were injured. The driver was later flown to Reno for medical treatment, the NHP said. The NHP said both occupants were local residents.
