Unite Against Bullying on Unity Day, Oct. 10

Join PACER and AVA-CASA and "Make It Orange and Make It End" During National Bullying Prevention Month

As a show of support to children who are bullied, PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center and Advocates for Victims of Abuse- Tri-County Court Appointed Special Advocates invites everyone to wear orange on Unity Day, Wednesday, Oct. 10, during National Bullying Prevention Month.

Nevada Range Management School in Lovelock Oct. 23 - 24

LOVELOCK - The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension continues to lead a team of educators, teaching a curriculum called "Range Management School" (RMS) across northern and central Nevada. Modified from a Colorado program, RMS uses sound science, collaboration, and common sense within a unified message by a team of interdisciplinary instructors.

Motorcycle vs. car --

MICHAEL MICHAELSON • Special to the SunA motorcycle headed toward town on Bridge Street was involved in an accident with a vehicle pulling out from Fifth Street on Thursday. According to the Winnemucca Police Department, the motorcycle rider attempted to brake, laid the motorcycle out, and slid under the vehicle. The individual was flown out of Winnemucca for medical care, but his condition is unknown. NHP is assisting with the investigation of the wreck and will present a final analysis to WPD.

When you talk to chukar hunters in Nevada you hear about how challenging the hunt actually is. You climb up steep mountains with rough terrain trying to catch a bird that is fast and clever and seems to take great joy in taunting you. It makes you wonder why they do it.

Trout Unlimited seeks volunteers to help with reseeding

Group to work on area burned by Holloway fire Oct. 20

WINNEMUCCA - The Sagebrush Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Nevada Dept. of Wildlife are partnering on a conservation project to rehabilitate two streams in the McDermitt Creek watershed. This area was severely damaged by the Holloway Fire during the summer of 2012. The Oct. 20 project will focus on reseeding riparian species and installing streambank stabilization measures to reduce post-fire erosion.

As soon as I walked in the owner's office, I knew that I was in trouble. You could tell by the mounted fish and pictures that Dave Raska was a hardcore fisherman and we got sidetracked for a few minutes talking about fishing.

VFW adopts Guard unit

COURTESY PHOTO On Saturday, Oct. 12, the local VFW Post 12116 held a barbecue and presentation of adoption papers to the local National Guard. The papers were presented by VFW Vice Commander Sheldon Rehberg to NCOIC Sgt. Marisa Aceves. With the adoption, the VFW pledges to offer assistance to any members of the National Guard stationed in Winnemucca or their families back home if help is needed. The great food was provided by the Pig BBQ and side dishes were made by VFW members and their families. The barbecue provided an opportunity to meet the 593 MTC and their families.
