WINNEMUCCA -The Humboldt Volunteer Hospice bet on the Winnemucca Mule Show and Races last June-and they got a great return.

Regional Transportation Commission meets Monday

WINNEMUCCA - The Regional Transportation Commission will meet Monday, Aug. 20, at 9:15 a.m. in the commission room at the courthouse, 50 W. 5Th St.The board will discuss and possibly take action on claims for expenditure of RTC funds, which are collected from gas taxes, including the 2012 Winnemucca Street Project - Hunewill Construction Co. for $129,200.40.The RTC also will discuss proposed fiscal year 2012-2013 priority projects for the city and county.

WINNEMUCCA - The old saying, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach," still seems to be operative today. At least part of the reason Lynn Lehman, 68, moved here three years ago was because of his stomach and all the good restaurants he knew to be in town.

Della DomingoA rare white hummingbird stopped by Joe and Della Domingo's backyard feeder in Water Canyon recently. It is not an albino, as its pure white feathers would suggest, but rather a Leucistic hummingbird, Della said. "It was just here two nights and we haven't seen it since," Della said.

WINNEMUCCA - My father was a teacher, coach, principal, and superintendent. He was a gifted mathematician, brilliant outdoorsman, and a man of broad wisdom. His bold ideas were ahead of the times, like an extra prep period for English teachers so that they would require and then respond in depth to young writers or "pod schools" with teachers of the same grade level under one collaborative roof. One time he closed three rural schools, an unimaginable feat as we each tend to love our local buildings. The schools were, however, located within 3 to 5 miles of town, rural in southern Idaho being quite different than rural Nevada.

Nevada Division of Emergency Management/Homeland Security conducts multi-county full scale search and rescue exercise

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management/Homeland Security (NDEM) conducted operation Green Light, a Full Scale Exercise Aug. 17 -19. Under Statute NRS 414.170-260, the NDEM establishes the Search and Rescue Program and provides resources to the sheriffs in the state upon request. The county sheriffs are statutorily responsible for Search and Rescue within their jurisdiction per NRS 248-092.
