The Nevada Gunfighters of the Old West are seeking to increase their membership, which currently consists of 15 - 18 men, women and children dedicated to the two-fold mission of promoting gun safety and the spirit of the Old West (circa 1860-1890's).
Next week, people of all faiths are invited to break bread - or eat turkey, as the case may be - in an attitude of thanksgiving.
The majority of Humboldt General Hospital's board members gave the go-ahead for the architect/construction manager team to compress the schedule for producing the architectural plans, construction documents, and bid specifications for the remaining phases (four and five) of hospital construction and remodeling.
An outbreak of whooping cough in Elko County was declared on Oct. 20, with 14 cases reported to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health since July of this year. Danika Williams, an epidemiologist with the department, said while the likelihood of an outbreak in Winnemucca was difficult to predict, there were steps the public could take to limit their chances of getting the disease.
The sweet voices of French Ford Middle School students serenaded veterans on Monday at the school's annual celebration of Veterans Day. The people packed in the auditorium learned that not only were they celebrating veterans, but also the 200th birthday of the "Star Spangled Banner" and Nevada's sesquicentennial.
The city council promises an entertaining evening for those attending the dinner on Saturday evening, which will recognize the contributions of Robert Cashell, T.G. "Red" Sheppard and Ralph Whitworth to the City of Winnemucca. The evening will also include a tribute to Joe Mackie, who Winnemucca Mayor Di An Putnam said was a great promoter of the city, and who helped put the town on the map.
The east hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center was packed with Lowry High School juniors and seniors as they made their way around booths set up by colleges and employers for the college and career fair held on Thursday, Nov. 6. Students clutched brochures and fliers and picked up all kinds of swag given out as token reminders of each business or school.
Citizens of Winnemucca braved the chilly temperatures and lined the sidewalks of Bridge Street to pay respect to our nation's veterans and to watch the annual Veterans Day parade. Winnemucca Police Chief Eric Silva led the parade as he escorted the color guard down the street to the cheers of the crowd.

Tonight is the night for a delicious pulled-pork sandwich dinner concert and dessert auction at the Lowry High School cafeteria. Both high school choirs will be performing in their first concert of the school year. The fund-raising evening, sponsored by the LHS Music Boosters, will feature a dessert auction as part of the fun. Money is used for student scholarships for music trips and purchasing instruments. Tickets are $5 and available at the door; the concert starts at 6: p.m.
RENO - Zack Totans is the new coordinator of TMCC's Veterans Resource Center, overseeing numerous services available to assist veterans who have enrolled at the college. He served for more than four years in the U.S. Army as an infantryman, with two tours of duty in Iraq. Totans is a Reno native, TMCC 2012 alumnus and is graduating in December with a double major of Business Administration in Finance and Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno.
LOVELOCK - A recent cattle drive came to a halt when livestock refused to enter a freeway underpass. After a brief standoff, however, cowboys managed to push the animals through the narrow tunnel to their winter range. Wet weather and graffiti abatement may have spooked the herd, explained rancher Dan Duncan.
Don't burn your leaves in a burn barrel! It is not allowed in the City of Winnemucca. Instead, burn your leaves in an open area and make sure you have a hose nearby to extinguish the fire. Do not leave the fire unattended at any time. Also, do not burn after dark.
