USDA releases state-by-state report

WASHINGTON - As part of the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) commitment to strengthening rural economies, Secretary Tom Vilsack announced a new state-by-state "Made in Rural America" report illustrating the impact of USDA investments in rural communities. Each state factsheet highlights specific USDA investments in rural businesses, manufacturing, energy, water and other infrastructure development. They also outline how USDA is helping rural communities attract businesses and families by investing in housing and broadband.

Services held Nov. 1 for Elko County commissioner

ELKO - Funeral services for Elko County Commissioner Grant Gerber, 72, who was knocked unconscious after his horse stumbled Oct. 7, were held Nov. 1 at the LDS East Stake Center in Elko. He died Oct. 25 in Salt Lake City.

Cash needed to make yearly Christmas program a success

Accompanied by a friendly public safety volunteer, some local kids get the chance to shop for Christmas gifts they wouldn't necessarily have the chance to buy. The Kidz-n-Cops program provides a shopping spree to qualifying children (ages five to 12) in the Humboldt County area.

Sexual assault suspect dies Oct. 26

No official charges ever filed against Peter Bhakta

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Prasantkumar "Peter" Bhakta, 49, who was arrested Aug. 5 for alleged attempted sexual assault died in Reno Oct. 26. His attorney, Hy Forgeron, said his death was a result of natural causes.

WASHINGTON - For tax year 2015, the Internal Revenue Service announced annual inflation adjustments for more than 40 tax provisions, including the tax rate schedules, and other tax changes. Revenue Procedure 2014-61 provides details about these annual adjustments.

IRS announces 2015 pension plan limitations

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service announced cost-of-living adjustments affecting dollar limitations for pension plans and other retirement-related items for tax year 2015. Many of the pension plan limitations will change for 2015 because the increase in the cost-of-living index met the statutory thresholds that trigger their adjustment. However, other limitations will remain unchanged because the increase in the index did not meet the statutory thresholds that trigger their adjustment. Highlights include the following:

Rewarding reading -

Fifty-seven medals were awarded to the Winnemucca Grammar School students during an assembly on Friday, Oct. 23. These medals are awarded for independent reading. Students read for 15 minutes to receive a step. They received medals for 100 steps, which is 25 hours of independent reading time. The ultimate goal is 400 steps, which is 100 hours of reading time. The medals were presented by Lowry varsity cheerleaders: Ari Arellano, Chelsea Baker, Hailey Caratzola, Ashley Carter, Rachael Foster, Annaleise Gabica, Yesenia Herrera, Jayci Hill, Ethan Jeffrey, Makayla Lopez, J.D. In line for influenza ... shots -

STEPHANIE MORTON • The Humboldt SunWinnemuccans queued up for free flu shots on Oct. 29, and Humboldt County Community Health representative, Susie Esquivel said 1,018 people were inoculated with the vaccine. Humboldt General Hospital, HGH EMS, Winnemucca Police and volunteers from Lowry High School and the Frontier Community Coalition assisted with the POD. The clinic was provided by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), and was open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead for those who don't remember their high school Spanish), is a Mexican festival honoring the dead. It coincides with the Catholic observances of All Saints Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls Day on Nov. 2.

Does Nevada's water need federal protection?

Some states don't have strong state environmental agencies, said Deputy Administrator David Gaskin, of the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) (water division). Nevada, however, has strong environmental protection laws and a very active and effective Division of Environmental Protection, he said.

Locals attend state's birthday parade

The state of Nevada marked 150 years of statehood on Oct. 31. Sesquicentennial events were held throughout the state during the past year, culminating with the annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Nov. 1.

A centennial celebration

Local, longtime Winnemucca resident Gladys Robinson celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, Nov. 1. Family and friends gathered at her home on Sunday to commemorate the milestone.
