The ground has been officially declared "broken" for the soccer fields - the first step to a hoped-for Winnemucca recreation center and Boys and Girls Club. Those who gathered included representation from the City of Winnemucca, Humboldt County government, Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, Humboldt County School District, and members of the Winnemucca Recreation Center/Boys and Girls Club Committee.

Don't let Halloween scare you to death, says AAA

LAS VEGAS - With Halloween only one day away, AAA reminds parents to be extra vigilant of the potential dangers that children face while trick or treating. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children are four times more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

NHP in northeastern Nevada awarded $91,500 in grants for traffic safety events

On Oct. 1, the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety awarded the Nevada Highway Patrol (Northeastern Nevada Region) $91,500 in federal grant funds to continue the national Campaign know as "Joining Forces."

Class collects creepy-crawlies

Just in time for the Halloween creepy-crawlies, the students in Michelle Pasquale's zoology class at Lowry High School have finished collecting a variety of arthropods including spiders, insects and crustaceans. Each group of students had to collect a minimum of 25 specimens and correctly display them by presenting the specimens properly with wings and legs correctly mounted on a pin. They also had to classify each specimen with the location of capture, the date, the common name and the order.

Prepaid tuition program reportedly thriving

Program's funded status is highest in the nation

CARSON CITY - State Treasurer Kate Marshall, chair of the Nevada College Savings Board (CSB) Board of Trustees, announced that the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Trust Fund (NPTF) assets generated a positive return of 13.92 percent for the fiscal year ended June 30, helping to drive the funded status of the program to a record high level of 126.2 percent. This is the highest funded ratio in the program's 15-year history and the highest of the 12 state-operated prepaid tuition plans in the nation. The funded ratio of 126.2% was calculated by the nationally recognized actuarial firm of Gabriel, Roeder and Smith, and is included in the Fiscal Year 2014 actuarial report for the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program, which was presented to the College Savings Board yesterday.

School board plans to sell district property

After receiving two appraisals from two separate appraisers, the Humboldt County School Board of Trustees will move forward the sale of 10 district-owned parcels near French Ford Middle School. The proceeds of the sale would be used to buy equipment and materials for the Boys and Girls Club, including the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math center.

USDA awards $18 Million in small business research grants supporting agricultural research and development

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) recently awarded more than $18 million in grants to small businesses for high quality, advanced research and development that will lead to technological innovations and solutions for American agriculture. NIFA awarded 100 grants through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

FCC donates to D.A.R.E. -

The Coalition donated $5,000 to the D.A.R.E. program which aims to educate children about the dangers of drug use. Cardenas, D.A.R.E. coordinator, said the donated funds would be used for training for the seven D.A.R.E. instructors and to purchase supplies. Kilgore said the program was a way for children to get to know the sheriff's deputies in a positive way.
