NDVS ROVER program schedules visit to Winnemucca Nov. 12 - 13

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) Veterans Outreach "ROVER" Program will visit Winnemucca so veterans and family members will be able to meet with a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) to learn about benefits and services they may be eligible for but unaware of.

Game wardens seek information on six elk shot, left to rot

Game wardens at the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) are seeking the public's help to solve the illegal killing of at least six elk, including four cows and two calves, in two different incidents in Lincoln County.

Gas prices going south

State prices dip at $3.40, a 28-cent drop in one month

LAS VEGAS - Silver State motorists are currently experiencing yet another drop in gasoline prices statewide, according to AAA Nevada fuel gauge monthly gas survey. The state average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.40. All metro areas are moving downward with the most significant decrease registering in North Las Vegas with a 30-cent decrease, since AAA's last fuel gauge report on Aug. 2.

Ballot question three is bad for Nevada business, say opponents

State Question No. 3 is alternatively called the Education Initiative by supporters and the Margin Tax by opponents. Regardless of what the tax is called, it imposes a 2 percent margin tax on businesses with total revenues which exceed $1 million. The funds raised are to fund the operation of public schools, say supporters. Opponents say there is no guarantee on what the legislature will do with the funds as Nevada law lets the legislature divert education funds to other uses.

Early voting sees steady turnout

The first full week of early voting in Humboldt County has been steady, according to the staff in the county clerk's office. Voters seem to really like being able to do their civic duty on their own schedule, rather than waiting for Election Day.

Armed robbery suspects in justice court

After 10 witnesses provided testimony in his preliminary hearing, all charges against Timothy John Lamkey, 25, were discharged on Friday in Union Township Justice Court. Justice of the Peace Letty Norcutt ruled there was insufficient evidence to bind the charges over to district court.

LHS Homecoming: Contagious energy

Friday was the busiest yet best day for Homecoming by far! It started out with a pep assembly that was truly entertaining and by far the best one that Lowry has seen in many years. That is all because of the Dream Team Student Body officers and the folks from Friday Night Rivals who came to film the assembly and broadcast the game live on our local channel 21. Not only that, but the leadership students put on a benefit tailgate to support Julia Aitken, Tovi Hilbish and Joelle Cooper in their battle against cancer and raised $3,400.

RENO - The University Preparatory School - precursor to the University of Nevada - first opened its doors in Elko to seven students on Oct. 12, 1874. The Nevada State Legislature approved the relocation of the University of Nevada to Reno in 1885, and students were welcomed to classes in Morrill Hall in 1886.
