Nevada SBA seeks 2015 award nominations

LAS VEGAS - The Nevada District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration announced it is actively seeking nominations for its signature statewide 2015 Small Business Awards. The SBA will recognize honorees in the following categories at a premier event on May 21, 2015 at the Gold Coast Hotel/Casino, sponsored by Vegas PBS.

NDOW sponsors beginners class in Verdi

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is sponsoring an introduction to fly fishing clinic Friday, Oct. 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This clinic is designed for entry level fly anglers and is free to all participants. The class will cover basic gear, knot tying, and casting. We will not be on the water. The class is limited to the first 20 persons who sign up.

Cindy (Falen) Sherburn began her junior year of school at Lowry High School in Winnemucca when it seemed that her parents might put together a lease on a ranch in Paradise Valley. Instead they made a deal on the Home Ranch 10 miles out of Orovada but could not take possession until March. With only a couple of months of her junior and her senior year left, they chose to let her continue at Lowry, where she played basketball for coach Lori Echaveria, even though her brother was a freshman at McDermitt. Eventually all her siblings graduated from MHS, and Cindy would have her two sisters as students when she first started teaching at McDermitt Combined School 30 years ago.

Tax-filing and payment extensions expire Oct. 15

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service today urged taxpayers whose tax-filing extension runs out on Oct. 15 to double check their returns for often-overlooked tax benefits and then file their returns electronically using IRS e-file or the Free File system.

Historic Preservation Fund grants available

CARSON CITY - The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) will distribute federal grant funds to nonprofit organizations and local and state agencies throughout the state to support historic building rehabilitation or restoration, public education, surveys, planning and National Register nominations. The funds, supplied by the National Park Service (NPS), come from off-shore oil and gas lease fees.

Big game hunting season is right around the corner, but the weather does not seem to be cooperating. If high temperatures remain for the next few weeks, it may present a problem for those of us that have drawn early season tags. It is important for hunters to understand how to care for their meat after the hunt is over, to insure all of their time and money does not go to waste with improper meat care.

Three arrested in armed robbery of cellular store

Police arrested three people in connection with an armed robbery of a cellular store on Monday afternoon. At about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, the WPD were dispatched to Blue Mountain Wireless on West Winnemucca Boulevard. No shots were fired and no one was injured during the robbery.
