Lone Tree Mine expansion - Brook Project determination of NEPA adequacy

Available for public comment

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, has completed a Determination of NEPA Adequacy (DNA) to review existing NEPA documents related to impacts associated with Newmont Mining Company's (NMC) Lone Tree Mine Expansion - Brooks Project. The proposed project is located approximately 27 miles southeast of Winnemucca in Humboldt County, Nev. Before the BLM issues a Decision Record, the public is invited to provide substantive comments on the DNA until the comment period ends Oct. 16, 2014.

Student mentors help others with academic success

At lunchtime on Thursday at Lowry High School, students ate pizza and talked about the upcoming football game. Nothing unusual about this scenario except this lunchtime meeting was between students struggling with their grades and their new student mentors.

Winnemucca Community Garden: Walk and Wag

The Winnemucca Community Garden hosted a "Walk & Wag" 2K event on Sept. 19. Pets and their people gathered at the garden for treats, agility courses, a little bling and a leashed walk around town. Lowry High cheer camp -

Young girls have praciticed all week on a dance with the JV and varsity cheerleaders and will perform tonight at the JV football game between Lowry and South Tahoe, which starts at 4:30 p.m.

School board discusses recreation center and other matters

• Lowry High School will have a welcoming and attractive entrance sometime next year, said Dr. Dave Jensen at the school board meeting on Tuesday night. Bids for the construction of a single-point of entry will take place in January and construction will begin over spring break of next year. The cost of the project will be about $300,000.

Wildlife refuge announces horse gather

Sheldon-Hart will gather 120 horses

Beginning Oct. 6, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to resume operations to gather approximately 120 wild horses within the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge as part of its ongoing management actions to protect native wildlife and habitat on the refuge. Leadership hosting fundraiser for local women

With the new school year already in full swing, Lowry High School's Leadership class has hit the ground running! To kick off the school year, Leadership hosted their annual welcome back week, adding a Hawaiian theme to an otherwise dreary first week of school with lunchtime activities, assemblies, and plenty of inflatable beach balls.

Looking Back: The Shrine Circus Train

This was an annual event in northern Nevada during the 1950s, the arrival of the Shrine Circus Train. Made up of several passenger cars and traveling on the Western Pacific, it gathered up children across the northern tier of the state and took them to Reno for the circus.

The Petersen family would like locals to believe the legend of Elias Slaughter is really just that: a legend. It's just a story that they dreamed up to sell tickets to their yearly haunted house. A trip to the Humboldt County Museum and a perusal of the archives show the story of Old Eli is no fairy story. It's the stuff nightmares are made from.
