Voting campaign can result in $60,000 for hunger relief for northern Nevada families

RENO - The public can help Food Bank of Northern Nevada win a $60,000 grant from Walmart as part of "Fight Hunger. Spark Change." a nationwide campaign at food banks across the country. The initiative will provide a total of $3.7 million to Feeding America and participating food banks and local partner agencies that provide hunger relief to millions of people in need of food assistance.

AmeriCorps members attend 20th Anniversary National Service Event

The Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps program kicked off the 2014-15 year by traveling to Reno on Sept. 12 for the AmeriCorps 20th Anniversary Event and National Service Project. Thirteen AmeriCorps members serving at host sites in Wells, Elko, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca and Lovelock made the trip to Reno. They participated in cleaning up the Truckee river with other Northern Nevada AmeriCorps members representing Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, the Children's Cabinet, Urban Roots and Great Basin Institute. Other participants included the city of Reno, staff members from Senator Reid's office, AmeriCorps alums and other community volunteers.

Nevada Junior Duck Stamp Program underway

LAS VEGAS - The Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program kicked off in Nevada and throughout the United States with the start of the school year. The annual program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, provides educational resources to teachers to help students in grades K-12 learn about the outdoor world and their connection to waterfowl, wetlands and habitat conservation.

Representatives from Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining presented teachers at the high school with what's available at the late-start Thursday presentation. Late start Thursdays allow teachers time for professional development for half an hour every Thursday morning.

Nonprofit organization looking for locals to join international team

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking volunteers to serve as area representatives in your local community. ASSE provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure.

Unlawful aircraft systems threaten firefighter safety and efficiency of wildfire suppression

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District wildfire managers are cautioning individuals and organizations that unauthorized operation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), often referred to as "drones," within or near wildfires threatens the safety of both aerial and ground firefighters and hampers their ability to protect lives, property, and valuable natural and cultural resources.
