Too often, the topic of elder abuse is ignored. Locally, our organization receives requests for assistance at least once a month. Many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives' homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it's important to speak up. Learn about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem.

This year the Motocross Association determined to step into a gap left by other clubs not hosting the Triple Crown races. Barrick's donation is helping cover the costs associated with the Winnemucca club's decision to host this year's Triple Crown series. The first two races were held over the Labor Day weekend, the third race of the series will be held the weekend of Oct. 10 - 12. "Supporting the community activities and quality of life for our employees outside of work is a key component of Barrick's Community Relations program," said program manager Melanie Lawson. The Humboldt River in normal years has some flooding from the spring melt. Most years it spreads along the river bank pastures for a few weeks then recedes. In 1910 the snow pack all along the river was higher than normal. The spring thaw brought all that water rushing downstream in a few days. Much more powerful than normal, it washed the center of the Frenchman's bridge away. The people of Winnemucca came to watch and to worry. It was more than an inconvenience! This was one of a very few bridges across the river. Without it the town was divided and a good bit of normal commerce halted.

It was unanimous. All the Humboldt County commissioners think the person who replaces Bill Deist as county administrator should be offered a salary commensurate with that earned by City Manager/Engineer Steve West. There was agreement with Commissioner Jim French's comment, "It's hard to offer less than what the city manager is making; to me that was telling."

Today's state average price of a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.68. Cutbacks and financial worries abound as school districts, Humboldt County included, address the difficulties of a balanced budget. Many critical needs are placed on the back burner such as facility improvement and funds for classroom materials as well as removing courses deemed as "non-essential". These courses range from art and music to computers and physical education. While you might say, "Kids can paint at home and take piano lessons then play outdoors with computer playtime after dinner", these four courses are essential in creating capable, energetic, rhythmic individuals. Others might add, "But classroom teachers are fully skilled in teaching these four areas", and while many are, just when and how can they cram this into already over-crowded lessons? Perhaps a highly caffeinated zealot is mandated, but at what expense.
