Humboldt County commissioners had the opportunity to appoint several area residents who had volunteered to serve on community boards at a recent meeting.

Some county boards go begging

Humboldt County commissioners appointed six county residents to a variety of community boards at their first commission meeting in July. Those who were appointed or re-appointed applied for volunteer (no compensation) service on the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority, Library Board, Paradise Valley Weed District, Advisory Board to Manage Wildlife, and Ag District 3.

STEPHANIE MORTON • The Humboldt SunStucco on the walls and some landscaping of the intersection project (located at Winnemucca Boulevard and Melarkey Street) has been completed. Eventually, lettering will spell out City of Winnemucca with the city emblem on the east corner wall, and Humboldt County with the county emblem on the west corner wall. City manager Steve West said the letters should go up in the next week.

Fifties Fever fun

The 22nd annual Fifties Fever event was held this past weekend and locals and visitors of all ages turned up to participate in the activities, which included live music, car shows, street drags and contests.Photos by Michael Michaelsen.

Winnemucca Rural Fire District responded to a vehicle fire near the Humboldt Readymix batch plant on West Winnemucca Boulevard at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27.

WPD responds to weekend shooting

Winnemucca Police arrested a man Saturday night who allegedly shot a woman in the hand. Police made the arrest after responding to a domestic violence call. The WPD was dispatched at 11:45 p.m. on July 27 and upon arrival, officers found a woman with a possible gunshot to her hand.

Several times a year, United Blood Services comes to the Winnemucca Convention Center with a call to residents to share the gift of life.

Statewide contest announced for final Sesquicentennial Medallion

Nevadans to decide fourth design

CARSON CITY - In honor of Nevada's 150th birthday, the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invites all Nevadans to participate in choosing the design for the fourth Sesquicentennial commemorative medallion. This medallion, the final in the series of four being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design voted on by Nevadans. Voting on Nevada150.org began July 23, which marks 100 days until Nevada Day, and ends Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014.
