Teams compete in Safety Olympiad

Teams from all over Nevada and surrounding states descended on Elko July 10 - 12 for the annual Safety Olympiad, an event that tests mine rescue teams on skills ranging from confined space rescue, ropes/rigging, hazardous materials, medical care and fire, among others. Participating teams included two nearby Newmont sites, Phoenix and Twin Creeks. The Phoenix team took home second place in the B Flight main event on Saturday, July 12; Thunder Basin (Wyoming) took first and Coeur Rochester took third place. The team's trainer, Kerry Tuckett, earned an award for his score on the trainer test. Twin Creeks Mine Rescue took home third place in the rigging/ropes event on Friday, July 11 and placed third overall. The team also placed third in A Flight in the main event; North Antelope Rochelle (Wyoming) took second and Round Mountain Gold took home first place. Camping in California -

COURTESY PHOTOA group of 10 local high school students and three leaders attended camp in Woodleaf, Calif., as part of the Young Life program last month. The group participated in a wide range of activities like an obstacle course, a carnival, a square dance, swimming, a mini-triathlon and a mud war. Each night, the group participated in a skit that sent a positive message to the teens. The group even faced fears by climbing a tower and jumping out of a tree. Over 400 teens attended the camp; one group even came all the way from Spain. During the camp, seven teens accepted or rededicated their lives to Jesus Christ, according to leader Lori Timko. "It was truly one of the best weeks of our lives and we would like to thank the community that stood behind us and helped get our local teens to such a life changing camp," Timko said. In support of the local group, Winger's will donate 15 percent of sales to Young Life the first Wednesday of every month.

Christmas in July -

COURTESY PHOTOChristmas in July was the theme of the Bingo held on Saturday, July 26 at the Grass Valley Community Center. Folks from all around attended and had a great time, according to organizer Annette Stripe. Two people shared the Blackout Jackpot, each taking home $85. The next event, the annual Turkey Bingo, will be held Nov. 15 - mark your calendar! Pictured above are Heather Ellensworth and Bingo caller Nick Cole.

Emancipation Proclamation to visit Nevada

Nevada's 150th birthday celebration this year will include a special visit to the Nevada Museum of Art by the original Emancipation Proclamation. Nevada's entry to statehood is intertwined with the Civil War, and helped the state earn the "Battle Born" nickname.

Republican Central Committee to host candidate Meet and Greet

Event slated for Aug. 7

There will be a Meet and Greet on Aug. 7 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Winnemucca Convention Center West Hall. Light refreshments will available for those who attend.

Auxiliary: nursing scholarships available

The " Poke" is humming with activity! Volunteers have their hands full sorting all the wonderful donations and placing them on the floor for sale. We happily received unexpected help from two great young ladies, Lesley and Vanessa, both capable and hard workers. The girls are relatives of auxiliary members, along with Jenna and Miky Adams who have joined and will be working when schedules allow. We welcome you all and hope to see you often!

Saddle-Trained horses up for adoption

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Nevada Department of Corrections invite horse enthusiasts and the general public alike to a special wild horse adoption event at the Western States Wild Horse and Burro Expo in Gardnerville on Friday, Aug. 1 and Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Inmates from the Northern Nevada Correctional Center's Saddle Horse Training program will showcase their training efforts during a competition that spans Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning, concluding with an awards ceremony and adoption of the animals.

Commissioners to hear about 'fracking' at Monday meeting

Humboldt County Commissioners will hold its next meeting on Monday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. in the meeting room of the court house. Following the administrative report and public comments, the commission will set public hearings for nuisance complaints at 10:15 a.m.

Following in a mentor's footsteps

A gracious tribute was paid to a very honorable young man at Lowry High School's graduation ceremony this year when graduating senior Kirk Berensten delivered a remarkable speech to his class that had been written and read by a previous Lowry student at the graduation ceremony of 2009. This individual is Ryan Mathes and he was a decorated honor student, who also served as a role model to Berensten for obvious reasons.

NVPERS to release retirees' benefit data in compliance with Supreme Court order

The Nevada Public Employment Retirement System has told its retirees that it will soon begin complying with the state Supreme Court's view of the Nevada Public Records Act, Nevada Journal has learned.

The spotlight is on McDermitt Alumni

Juan Martin Legarza was born Feb. 5, 1874 in Nachitua, Spain. He immigrated to the USA in the mid 1890's and began working as a sheepherder before acquiring the Riverside Ranch at Orovada, Nev., (now owned by Grace McErquiaga). In late 1899 he sent a letter to EA, Spain asking for the hand of Maria Florencia Erquiaga and she made the journey, via Ellis Island, arriving at the Sod House Ranch where she stayed with her brothers until her marriage to Juan Jan. 2, 1900. The couple settled in at the Riverside Ranch and their eight children-Martin, Matio, Joseph, Nieves, Salvador (Salee), Adolpho (Al), Fransisco and Anna were all born there.

Convention center parking lot study underway

Partial closure will continue

Parking in downtown Winnemucca is frequently a source of contention, both for those who want to park there, and for nearby downtown businesses who want parking for their potential customers. As such, the closure of a portion of the parking behind the east hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center is an annoyance, at the least.

Missing teen may be headed to McDermitt

Fourteen-year-old Trenton Crutcher, of McDermitt, ran away from a treatment facility in Colorado late at night on July 27 and may be heading to northern Nevada. The teen's family would like help in locating Crutcher.

New cardiologists provide expanded access to local heart care for rural residents

RENO - Residents in Winnemucca, have more local access to expert heart care with specialists from Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular Health. Thomas-Duythuc To, M.D.; Troy Wiedenbeck, M.D.; and Christopher Wilson, M.D., Ph.D. have recently joined the Institute and will continue to provide premiere heart care in northern Nevada and eastern California.
