NWS recognizes local observers for years of service

Most people know that the National Weather Service in Elko forecasts weather for Humboldt County, and issues warnings for tornados, floods, snow, and dust storms, among other things. Few realize that they also gather critical climate information from citizens here in the county. The NWS' Co-operative Observer (CO-OP) Program is the nation's way of collecting the kind of weather information that meteorologists, climatologists, and even private companies, use for forecasts and to plan for things like water supplies, crop and livestock reports, environmental impact assessments, utilities planning, and climate change models.

Is a new Social Security card in your cards?

To help combat the rising threat of fraud and identity theft, Social Security will no longer issue Social Security number printouts beginning in August 2014. If you need written confirmation of your Social Security number-perhaps your new employer needs verification-and you can't find your Social Security card, you can apply for a replacement.

School board meets Tuesday, June 24

The Humboldt County School Board meets Tuesday, June 24 at 4:30 p.m. at the district office board room, 310 East Fourth Street. Trustees will discuss and possibly take action on the following items:

BLM considers use of motorized vehicles to manage wild horses on public lands

Public hearing set for June 18

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will conduct a public hearing on the use of motorized vehicles including aircraft in the monitoring and management of wild horses and burros on public lands in Nevada. The hearing will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 6 p.m. at the Bureau of Land Management Winnemucca District Office, 5100 East Winnemucca Blvd. Winnemucca.

FamilyConnect: A family history fair

Last month's FamilyConnect Family History Fair drew over 100 people to the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints. Local residents were invited to discover and strengthen their family connections next month during a free family history event and patrons got the opportunity to learn about heritage and how to archive information. "FamilyConnect: A Family History Fair" took place on Saturday, May 31. Missoula Children's Theater performs beloved story

Missoula Children's Theater kicked off their summer theater camps with The Wizard of Oz. Young thesbians dazzled audiences on June 21 with multiple performances. Next up for MTC is Rapunzel, scheduled for the week of July 21 - 26 with performances on the 26th. Age group for both workshops is from entering first grade in August through first summer after graduation from high school. Fees are $25 for the first child in a family, and $20 for each additional child in the same family. Humboldt County Commissioners will write a letter of support to accompany a Veteran's Admininstration grant application which will help fund a trip to the Reno VA hospital two Wednesdays a month.

Nevada Tourism approves nearly $1 million in grants for rural Nevada

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) has awarded $985,146 in grant funding for projects throughout rural Nevada designed to increase travel to those areas, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday at the commission's quarterly meeting. Among the unique proposals approved by the Commission are a social media "selfie" scavenger hunt contest in the state's central/southern region as well as a project to promote the ParaLong Drive World golf tournament in Mesquite for golfers with disabilities.

Hospice donation -

The Griddle restaurant will donate a percentage of its sales to the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice on Tuesday, June 24. The choice of recipient was easy, according to Regional Manager Abe Aboud, especially since the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice had recently helped provide end-of-life care to Suzie Fouchet, a long-time waitress at the restaurant who passed away April 22 following an extended illness.

Connect Nevada's figures show speed growth

CARSON CITY - New research released today by Connect Nevada shows that 95.36 percent of Nevada households have access to fixed broadband at a minimum of 10 Mbps download/1.5 Mbps upload. In October 2011, the data showed that 91.44 percent of the households had access across the state at these speeds.

Denio Library kicks off summer reading program

The Denio Library recently kicked off their summer reading program, Fizz! Boom! Read! with robot-themed activities. The program will run through July 30 with themed weekly activities. They meet on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. at the Denio Community Hall for storytime, crafts, games and snacks. For more information call the Denio Library at (775) 941-0330.
