Community members are invited to gather on Saturday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Park for World Peace and Prayer Day.

Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced two separate feral horse and burro operations which will take place this summer in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge as part of its ongoing management actions to protect native wildlife and their habitat on the refuge.

Handwriting is important

"Know your Schools"

I view handwriting as a developmental, fine-motor skill. Some educators argue that this is important in the primary grades, but after that word processors take over and no need for further instruction, practice, or the requirement of legible script exists. Even the Common Core English/Language Arts Standards de-emphasize writing after primary grades. While there are expectations for legibility, focus shifts to proficiency on the keyboard.

Teddy Swecker & students' art show

Teddy Swecker's art students are showing their paintings throughout the next month at the Humboldt County Library. Swecker and class members will be at the library for a reception to be held Wednesday, June 18, from five to eight. Everyone is invited to come by the outside front patio of the library and enjoy refreshments and live music; children are welcome.

The Elko Family Resource Center recently received a grant that will allow instructors to travel to Winnemucca to teach abstinence-only education to students ages 9-12 and abstinence/contraception classes to students ages 13-18.

Summer reading program sign-ups continue

Seven-year-old Logan Jonas and his 3-year-old brother Nolan brought their parents Kayla and Matt Jonas into the children's library to sign up for the summer reading program. If you missed kick-off day for the summer reading program, it's not too late. Just come into the children's library downstairs in the Humboldt County Library; sign-ups are open through the first week of August.
